{"id":1238,"date":"2017-08-01T00:43:14","date_gmt":"2017-08-01T00:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/blog\/?p=1238"},"modified":"2017-08-10T16:50:39","modified_gmt":"2017-08-10T16:50:39","slug":"wantrepreneurs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/blog\/wantrepreneurs\/","title":{"rendered":"LA and NYC Are the Top Cities for &#8216;Wantrepreneurs&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They&#8217;re two of the biggest startup cities in the world, so it&#8217;s no surprise that Los Angeles and New York City are filled with people who want to be\u00a0entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p><b>The coasts have the most<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Forty-six percent of tech workers\u00a0in LA and 44% of tech workers in NYC say they plan to start a business in the next five years, according to the latest reading of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/guest\/culture\/tech\/all-departments\/130-do-you-plan-to-start-your-own-company-in-the-next-5-years\">ongoing query<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/\">Comparably<\/a>.\u00a0More than 1,000 workers across the technology industry responded to the query.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/guest\/culture\/tech\/all-departments\/130-do-you-plan-to-start-your-own-company-in-the-next-5-years\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1239\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1239\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/want.jpg\" alt=\"want\" width=\"616\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/want-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/want.jpg 616w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>LA (known as Silicon Beach) and NYC (known as Silicon Alley) had the highest concentration of these so-called &#8220;wantrepreneurs.&#8221; San Francisco, Austin, and Phoenix were also high on the list, each with 41% of respondents saying they plan to start a business in the next five years.<\/p>\n<p><b>Portland comes in at the bottom<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The city of Portland, Ore., had the lowest percentage of wantrepreneurs: 22% of respondents said they plan to start a business in the next five years.\u00a0The nearby city of Seattle also ranked on the low end of the spectrum, at 29%.<\/p>\n<p><b>By age<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/guest\/culture\/tech\/all-departments\/130-do-you-plan-to-start-your-own-company-in-the-next-5-years\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1242\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/age.jpg\" alt=\"age\" width=\"514\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/age-300x96.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/age.jpg 514w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 514px) 85vw, 514px\" \/><\/a>The youngest workers were generally most keen on starting a business. Forty-six percent of workers\u00a0aged 26 to 30 said they want to start a company in the next five years. The rate declined gradually from there, hitting 27% among 41 to 45 year olds.<\/p>\n<p><b>Most won&#8217;t actually start a business<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Historically, very few people start a business compared to the larger whole.
