It makes sense: in today\u2019s 24\/7 hyper-connected world, we spend most of our waking hours interacting with our colleagues, even on nights and weekends.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In an effort to learn more about these important coworker bonds, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/\"><b>Comparably<\/b><\/a> asked workers across the technology industry to describe their own feelings toward their coworkers. The data, which comes from thousands of employees at small, mid-size, and large public and private tech companies, was collected between March 2016 and July 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents were asked the following:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Does someone you work with closely make you want to quit your job?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;How likely are you to share your compensation with coworkers?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;To whom do you feel most loyal at work?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Have you ever dated a coworker while both at the same company?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Do you have a close friend at work?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;How often do you socialize with team members outside of work?<\/p>\n<p>Check out the results and methodology below.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>1 in 3 people say they have a coworker who makes them want to quit<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Women are<\/b> <b>more likely than men<\/b> to want to quit their job because of a coworker (43% of women vs. 32% of men).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><u>BY AGE<\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Workers 18 to 25 reported some of the <b>lowest rates of coworker aggravation, <\/b>with 71% of them saying they <b>do not<\/b> work with someone who makes them want to quit. Workers on the older end of the spectrum agreed: 72% of those aged 56 to 60 say they <b>do not<\/b> work with someone who makes them want to quit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Workers in the middle are <b>much more likely to be frustrated<\/b> by their coworkers. The peak is for those aged 36 to 40, a time at which many people find themselves at or near the pinnacle of their careers: 60% of them say they <b>do not<\/b> work with a coworker who makes them want to quit (meaning 40% <b>do<\/b>). Note: The sample size for workers 61 and up was statistically insignificant and therefore eliminated from the chart below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1269\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/1.png\" alt=\"1\" width=\"593\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/1-300x104.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/1.png 593w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 593px) 85vw, 593px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><u>BY EXPERIENCE<\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Desire to quit increases with work experience.<\/b> Workers with more than 10 years of experience at their company showed the <b>highest rates<\/b> of wanting to quit \u2013 63% of them say they do not work with someone who makes them want to quit, meaning 37% do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Workers with one to three years of experience were <b>least likely<\/b> to entertain that thought (72% said they do not work with a coworker who makes them wants to quit, meaning 28% do).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1270\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/2.png\" alt=\"2\" width=\"692\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/2-300x79.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/2.png 692w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><u>BY DEPARTMENT<\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Workers in business development and design roles showed the <b>highest rates<\/b> of wanting to quit because of a coworker (54% and 55%, respectively, said they <b>do not<\/b> work with a coworker who makes them want to quit, meaning 46% and 45%<b> do<\/b>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">People in communications roles were on the other end of the spectrum: 86% of them said they <b>do not <\/b>work with a coworker who makes them want to quit. Workers in customer support and HR also showed low rates of frustration with their coworkers (73%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1271\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/3.png\" alt=\"3\" width=\"667\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/3-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/3.png 667w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><u>BY EDUCATION LEVEL<\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>The more education you have, the more annoyed you\u2019re likely to be. <\/b>Workers who have achieved a doctoral degree were the most likely to say that a coworker bothers them to the point of wanting to quit (53% of them said they <b>do not<\/b> work with a coworker who makes them want to quit, meaning 47% of them <b>do<\/b>).<\/p>\n<p>Workers with a high school degree were least likely to say they work with someone who quits their job (74% say they <b>do not<\/b> work with someone who makes them want to quit, meaning <b>26%<\/b> of them do.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1272\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/4.png\" alt=\"4\" width=\"714\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/4-300x76.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/4.png 714w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Most people are still hesitant to reveal their salary to their coworkers<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s still taboo for people to reveal how much they earn, though millennials are more open to it than most.<\/p>\n<p><u>BY AGE<\/u><\/p>\n<p>More than 30% of workers <b>aged 18 to 30<\/b> said they were \u201csomewhat\u201d or \u201cvery\u201d likely to share their salary with their coworkers. Only 12% of workers <b>above 40<\/b> said the same.<\/p>\n<p>Older millennials (those aged 31 to 35) were <b>less eager<\/b> to talk salary than their younger counterparts, though 29% of them said it would depend on the situation. <b>That\u2019s the most in any age group.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1273\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/salary.png\" alt=\"salary\" width=\"538\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/salary-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/08\/salary.png 538w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 538px) 85vw, 538px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thirty-one percent of respondents across all age groups said they were <b>unlikely<\/b> to share their compensation details, and 21% said they would <b>never<\/b> do it. The next most popular response was \u201cboss or manager,\u201d with 30% of the vote. That was the <b>highest rate<\/b> among any age group.<\/p>\n<p>The lowest rate was among workers 18 to 25, 23% of whom admitted to having dated a coworker. This is an important figure, as studies show that people who cultivate friendships at the office are happier and more productive at work.<\/p>\n<p><u>BY DEPARTMENT<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Sixty percent of workers in the HR department at tech companies say they have a close friend at work \u2013 the <b>highest <\/b>of any other group. Fifty-seven percent of workers 30 or younger say they have a close friend at work, the most of any age group. From there, the rate slowly declines, bottoming out at 40% for workers aged 56 to 60.
