Depending on who you ask, they\u2019re either the hardest workers, the laziest workers, the neediest workers, or the most self-sufficient. Having been brought up in a globally connected digital world, their needs and desires are different than generations past. But how much do we know about their needs and desires, really?<\/p>\n<p>Defined by the Census Bureau as the generation born between 1982 and 2000, millennials are now one year into being the predominant generation in the U.S. labor force. That\u2019s why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/\"><b>Comparably<\/b><\/a> is taking a deep dive into the millennial experience at work.<\/p>\n<p>The data, which comes from the responses of thousands of employees at small, mid-size, and large public and private companies was collected between March 2016 and August 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents were asked the following:<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>Do you think your job could be replaced by a robot in the next 10 years? <\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>Do you feel that you&#8217;ve been held back in your career because of your gender? <\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>Besides your salary, what\u2019s most important to you about work? <\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>Do you plan to start your own company in the next 5 years?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>How much longer do you see yourself working at your current company? <\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>How likely are you to share your compensation with co-workers?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>How much work time per day do you spend using social media? <\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>How often do you lie to your boss?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b> <\/b>Check out the results and our methodology below.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b> <\/b><b>Millennials are the most confident that robots will take over their jobs<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1520\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/1.png\" alt=\"1\" width=\"516\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/1-300x94.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/1.png 516w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 516px) 85vw, 516px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>The robots are coming.\u00a0<\/b>19% of workers 18 to 35 say they think their job will be replaced by a robot in the next 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>Millennials are more convinced than any other worker.\u00a0<\/b>11% of workers above 35 say they believe their job will be replaced by a robot in the next 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>Young millennials are the biggest believers in the robot revolution.\u00a0<\/b>24% of workers in the 18 to 25 group think their job will be replaced by a robot in the next 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>1 in 4 millennials feel gender has held them back in their careers<\/b><b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1521\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/2.jpg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"521\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/2-300x97.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/2.jpg 521w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 521px) 85vw, 521px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>Measuring the glass ceiling.\u00a0<\/b>Overall, 23% of men and women aged 18 to 35 say they feel their gender has held them back in their careers. That\u2019s a higher concentration than workers in the 36-45 age group (19%), and mostly in line with workers aged 46 and up (22%).<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>Half of all women feel their gender has held them back.\u00a0<\/b>51% of women overall say their gender has held them back at work. The rate is slightly higher in the tech sector, where 54% of women say their gender has held them back. In industries outside of tech, 45% of women say their gender has held them back. These rates are for all age groups.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>The three tech departments where women feel most held back.\u00a0<\/b>Women who work in the following departments at technology firms reported the highest rates of feeling held back in their careers: finance (68%), engineering (63%) and executive (63%). Only 12% of workers above 40 said the same.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>Millennials also answered \u201cit depends\u201d more than any other age group.<\/b>27% of millennial workers aged 18 to 35 said their decision to discuss their salary with their coworkers is dependent on the situation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1525\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/6.jpg\" alt=\"6\" width=\"462\" height=\"51\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/6-300x33.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/6.jpg 462w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 462px) 85vw, 462px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>Older millennials (those aged 31 to 35) were slightly more reticent than younger millennials.\u00a0<\/b>22% said they were \u201csomewhat\u201d or \u201cvery\u201d likely to reveal their salary to their coworkers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1526\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/7.jpg\" alt=\"7\" width=\"466\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/7-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/7.jpg 466w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 466px) 85vw, 466px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>The results show that compensation is still a highly sensitive subject across all age groups.\u00a0<\/b>32% of respondents across all age groups said they were\u00a0<b>not likely\u00a0<\/b>to share their compensation details, and 22% said they would\u00a0<b>never\u00a0<\/b>do it. (The 41-45 age group was most against it, with 29% answering \u201cnever.\u201d Only 17% of workers aged 18-35 said the same.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1527\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/8.jpg\" alt=\"8\" width=\"959\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/8-300x83.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/8-768x212.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/8.jpg 959w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b> <\/b><b>Nearly 40% of millennials think they\u2019ll start their own company in 5 years<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1528\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/9.jpg\" alt=\"9\" width=\"511\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/9-300x97.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/9.jpg 511w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 511px) 85vw, 511px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;\u00a0<b>Millennials are smitten with entrepreneurship.\u00a0<\/b>38% of millennials aged 18 to 35 say they plan to start their own company in the next five years. Of course most of them won\u2019t: young people (20-34) have been shown to have the lowest rates of starting new businesses, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3046773\/the-state-of-the-american-entrepreneur-in-2015\">Kauffman Index<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>Desire to start a business declines with age.\u00a0<\/b>The desire to start a new business dropped off after age 30, falling to a low of 24% among 46 to 50 year olds. (Responses above age 55 were eliminated due to small sample size.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Millennials spend the most time on social media during the workday \u2013 though not as much time as you might guess<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>Over an hour a day.\u00a0<\/b>21% of workers aged 18 to 35 say they spend a minimum of an hour using social media during the workday \u2013 the most of any age group. Just 16% of workers over age 35 say the same.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>15 minutes or less.\u00a0<\/b>31% of workers aged 18 to 35 spend 15 minutes or less on social media during the workday \u2013 the least of any age group. 40% of workers over age 35 say they spend 15 minutes or less on social media during the work day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;\u00a0<b>The youngest spend the most time connected.\u00a0<\/b>23% of workers aged 18 to 25 spend an hour or more on social media during the workday.<\/p>\n<p><b> <\/b><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1529\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/10.jpg\" alt=\"10\" width=\"469\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/10-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/10.jpg 469w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 469px) 85vw, 469px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Millennials aren\u2019t quite as eager to switch jobs as often perceived<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<b>Ready to hop and to stay put.\u00a0<\/b>32% of workers aged 18 to 35 say they can see themselves leaving their job within a year.
