But there\u2019s still a long way to go.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to shed light on perceptions and experiences related to female leadership, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/\"><b>Comparably<\/b><\/a> compiled data from more than 24,000 employees in and out of the technology world. The data, which comes from the responses of thousands of employees at small, mid-size, and large public and private companies, was collected between March 2016 and September 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents were asked the following:<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>Do you think there are enough women in leadership positions at your company?<\/b><br \/>\n&#8212; <b>Do you feel that you&#8217;ve been held back in your career because of your gender? <\/b><br \/>\n&#8212; <b>Do you prefer to work with women or men?<\/b><br \/>\n&#8212; <b>What do you think would most improve office cultures across different companies? <\/b><br \/>\n&#8212; <b>Does your company encourage open discussion of workplace issues related to gender and diversity?<\/b><br \/>\n&#8212; <b>Have you ever been sexually harassed at work?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Check out the results and our methodology below.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>A majority of men say there are enough women in leadership roles<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>60% of men and 49% of women in all industries say there <u>are<\/u> enough women in leadership roles at their company.<\/b><b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>In the tech industry, the rates were slightly lower:<\/b> 58% of men and 46% of women say there are enough women in leadership roles at their company.<b> <\/b><b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1736\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/A.png\" alt=\"A\" width=\"537\" height=\"49\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/A-300x27.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/A.png 537w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 537px) 85vw, 537px\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>That means 40% of men and 51% of women in all industries say there <u>aren\u2019t<\/u> enough women in leadership roles at their companies <\/b>(or 42% of men and 54% of women in tech).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>The more educated you are, the more likely you are to feel that there aren\u2019t enough women in leadership roles. <\/b>Workers with a Bachelor\u2019s, Master\u2019s or Doctoral degree most believe that there aren\u2019t enough women in leadership at their companies (47% of them said there are vs. 69% of those with a high school diploma, some college, or an Associate\u2019s degree.)<\/p>\n<p><b> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1737\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/B-1.png\" alt=\"B\" width=\"593\" height=\"123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/B-1-300x62.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/B-1.png 593w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 593px) 85vw, 593px\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>The departments where people feel there aren\u2019t enough women in leadership.<\/b> In tech, people who work in HR, business development, and marketing felt least confident in there being enough women in leadership roles at their company.<\/p>\n<p><b> <\/b><b><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1738\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/C.jpg\" alt=\"C\" width=\"564\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/C-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/C.jpg 564w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 564px) 85vw, 564px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Nearly half of all women feel gender has held them back in their careers<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>46% of women in all industries say their gender has held them back at work. <\/b>The rate is slightly higher in the tech sector, where 50% of women say their gender has held them back. That\u2019s a higher concentration than workers in the 36-45 age group (19%), and mostly in line with workers aged 46 and up (22%).<\/p>\n<p><b> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1741\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/b.jpg\" alt=\"b\" width=\"521\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/b-300x97.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/b.jpg 521w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 521px) 85vw, 521px\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>The three tech departments where women feel most held back. <\/b>Women who work in the following departments at technology firms reported the highest rates of feeling held back in their careers: finance (68%), engineering (63%) and executive (63%). These rates are for all age groups.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>There\u2019s an even split between those who prefer to work with men or women<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>When asked whether they prefer to work with men or women, half of people in all industries (including tech) chose women. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><b> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1742\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/x.jpg\" alt=\"x\" width=\"584\" height=\"49\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/x-300x25.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/x.jpg 584w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 85vw, 584px\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>By industry. <\/b>At tech companies, workers in communications, product, and design showed the highest rates of choosing women over men. Workers in admin, IT, and customer support showed the lowest rates of choosing women over men.<\/p>\n<p><b> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1743\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/y.png\" alt=\"y\" width=\"535\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/y-300x154.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/y.png 535w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 535px) 85vw, 535px\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>Consistent across all ages. <\/b>The rate of workers who chose women over men remained consistent across all age groups.<\/p>\n<p><b> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1744\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/z.jpg\" alt=\"z\" width=\"413\" height=\"137\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/z-300x100.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/z.jpg 413w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 413px) 85vw, 413px\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>What\u2019s the one thing that would most improve culture? Better leaders.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>35% of all workers said having better leadership would improve company culture. <\/b>That was the most popular answer. The results were the same for workers specifically in the technology industry.<\/p>\n<p><b> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1745\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/4-1.jpg\" alt=\"4\" width=\"782\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/4-1-300x79.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/4-1-768x202.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/4-1.jpg 782w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>Men and women answered nearly identically. <\/b>Men were slightly more likely to choose \u201cbetter leaders\u201d and \u201cmore transparency,\u201d while women were slightly more likely to choose \u201cmore communication and \u201cmore diverse employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1746\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/5-1.png\" alt=\"5\" width=\"612\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/5-1-300x117.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/5-1.png 612w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>Youngest workers were most likely to choose \u201cmore communication.\u201d <\/b>Workers across all levels chose \u201cbetter leaders\u201d as the No. 1 priority except for workers 18 to 25, who ranked \u201cmore communication\u201d as their top pick.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1747\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/6-1.png\" alt=\"6\" width=\"383\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/6-1-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/6-1.png 383w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 383px) 85vw, 383px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>1 in 4 women has been sexually harassed at work<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>26% of women in all industries say they have been sexually harassed at work.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1748\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/l.jpg\" alt=\"l\" width=\"551\" height=\"61\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/l-300x33.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2017\/09\/l.jpg 551w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 551px) 85vw, 551px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>The rate is somewhat higher in tech (28% of women) vs. non-tech (24% of women).<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <b>The highest rates by department. <\/b>33% of women in IT at tech companies say they have been sexually harassed, the highest rate of any department. Women in business development, operations, and product reported the next highest rates, at 32%, 31%, and 31% respectively.
