Imagine you had your boss’s job. What’s the first thing you’d do: Create an entirely new and improved product? Give everyone a raise?<\/p>\n

A Comparably<\/a> query of more than 10,000 employees across the tech industry\u00a0reveals the number 1 answer is\u00a0improve \u201cvision and strategy\u201d (33%).<\/p>\n

Room for improvement<\/b><\/p>\n

After “vision and strategy,” the\u00a0next most popular response was \u201cimprove office culture\u201d (23%), followed by and \u201cincrease employee pay\u201d (22%). The lowest priorities were \u201cmake a better product\u201d (16%), and \u201ccut expenses\u201d (6%).<\/p>\n

Admin, customer support choose differently<\/b><\/p>\n

Workers in\u00a0administrative roles\u00a0and\u00a0customer support\u00a0were the only people who ranked \u201cincrease employee pay\u201d\u00a0above\u00a0improving strategy and vision. Workers in\u00a0finance\u00a0were unique in that they ranked \u201cvision and strategy\u201d\u00a0just as importantly\u00a0as \u201cincrease employee pay\u201d and \u201cimprove office culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

The youngest workers had their eye on pay<\/b><\/p>\n

The only age group that\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0rank vision and strategy as No. 1 was the 18 to 25 set \u2014 the youngest workers surveyed. Twenty-seven percent of them chose \u201cincrease employee pay,\u201d slightly more than the 24% who chose \u201cvision and strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Portland had the highest percentage of people who chose vision and strategy.<\/b><\/p>\n

At 37%, the city of\u00a0Portland, Ore.,\u00a0had the highest percentage of respondents who chose \u201cvision and strategy.\u201d\u00a0Boston\u00a0and\u00a0Chicago\u00a0were close behind, each with 35% of the vote.<\/p>\n
