Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google and Microsoft are known for asking rigorous interview questions designed to bring in the brightest thinkers, but each has its own way of conducting the interview process overall.<\/p>\n

Reviews left by employees via Comparably<\/b><\/a> highlight the following:<\/p>\n

— Apple: <\/em><\/b>\u201cExpect to be turned away a few times. Getting hired is an arc. You might interview for a few jobs over a few years before you land.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

— Amazon: <\/em><\/b>The interview process is \u201cexhausting and very long, but funny enough, when I go to other companies I leave the 1-2hr interview thinking \u2018how on earth will these people know if they want to hire me?\u2019 Amazon really looks at and talks to you about your work.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

— Facebook:<\/em><\/b> For engineering positions, you can wear a \u201ct-shirt and jeans or whatever is most comfortable for you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

— Google:<\/em><\/b> The interview process is \u201clong and rigorous.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

— Microsoft:<\/em><\/b> The interview process is \u201cMore challenging that average.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Comparably<\/b><\/a> took an inside look at the interview experience at each company. The results come from the insights of more than 6,000 employees across all five companies. Full methodology below.<\/p>\n

How people rate the interview process overall<\/b><\/p>\n

When asked to rate their overall experience interviewing at their current company, employees gave Apple and Microsoft<\/b> the highest ratings.<\/p>\n

Facebook <\/b>received the lowest ratings.<\/p>\n

The most and least difficult interviews<\/b><\/p>\n

Employees at Google <\/b>were most likely to rate the interview process as \u201cdifficult\u201d or \u201cvery difficult\u201d (49%). Microsoft <\/b>was close behind at 47%.<\/p>\n

Employees at Amazon<\/b> rated their interviews easiest, with 30% saying the interview was \u201ceasy\u201d or \u201cvery easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The most popular ways of getting an interview<\/b><\/p>\n

Of the most popular methods for landing an interview, the most popular answer at all companies was \u201capplied online,\u201d except<\/u> at Google and Microsoft,<\/b> where \u201crecruiter\u201d was the most popular answer. Apple<\/b> had the lowest rates of people who applied by recruiter (10%); Facebook <\/b>had the highest rate of people who applied via networking (19%); and Amazon<\/b> had the lowest rates of people who applied via networking (3%).<\/p>\n

The average response time after the last interview<\/b><\/p>\n

The average amount of time most people had to wait was about a week after their last interview, except at Google<\/b>, where the norm was either 1-2 weeks or 2-4 weeks. A significant portion of people at both Google and Facebook<\/b> had to wait 4+ weeks (19% and 16% of employees, respectively).<\/p>\n

By contrast, just 2% of people at Microsoft<\/b> had to wait 4+ weeks. (Microsoft also had the highest rate of people who heard back the same day \u201323%.)<\/p>\n

The average number of interviews before getting an offer<\/b><\/p>\n

People applying at Google and Facebook<\/b> tend to have the most interviews (4 or 5), while people at Amazon<\/b> tend to have the fewest (1 or 2) before getting the job.<\/p>\n

Did the interview process give you a good sign of culture at your company?<\/b><\/p>\n

About 85% of employees at Facebook<\/b> said the interviewing process was representative of the company culture; just 46% of employees at Apple<\/b>\u00a0said the same.<\/p>\n

Methodology<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n

— The data comes from 6,463 employees at Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google and Microsoft who responded to a series of survey questions.
\n— Questions were in Yes\/No and multiple-choice format. Each survey was initiated sometime between March 2018 and June 2018. Results are as of July 9, 2018.<\/p>\n

\n— How difficult would you rate the interview process at your current company?<\/em>
\n— Did your interview process give you a good representation of the culture at your company?<\/em>

— People of all ages, educational backgrounds, ethnicities and experience levels were included.<\/p>\n
