Forty percent of women said they feel their gender has held them back in their careers, according to the latest reading of an ongoing\u00a0query<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Comparably<\/a>.\u00a0More than 10,000 people responded to the query.<\/p>\n

**Note: Figures below show who responded “No” to the question, “Do you feel that you’ve been held back in your career because of your gender?”**<\/p>\n

Departments where this feeling is most prevalent<\/b><\/p>\n

On a department level, women in engineering (46%)\u00a0and IT (44%)\u00a0were most likely to feel that gender has held them back in their careers.<\/p>\n

Women in\u00a0admin and customer support (26%\u00a0and 39%, respectively) were least likely to feel this way.<\/p>\n

Interestingly,\u00a0men<\/b>\u00a0in admin reported relatively high rates of feeling held back by their sex (27%). (The\u00a0overall average among men was 12%.)<\/p>\n

From an ethnicity perspective<\/b><\/p>\n

African American and Native American workers were most likely to feel that their\u00a0gender had held them back (32% and 28%, respectively).\u00a0\u00a0Caucasians were least likely to feel this way (22%).<\/p>\n

People in the early parts of their career most likely to feel that gender is a barrier<\/b><\/p>\n

People 18 to 25 were most likely to see gender as a career block (33%). The rate declined from there, hitting a low of 20% among people 41 to 45.<\/p>\n
