Today for Comparably’s Culture Showdown, it’s two major California-based video game developers going head-to-head:\u00a0Riot Games<\/b> and\u00a0Blizzard Entertainment<\/b>. LA-based Riot is best known for League of Legends,\u00a0<\/em>the company’s flagship multiplayer online battle game. Blizzard, based in Irvine, has the hugely popular Warcraft\u00a0<\/em>franchise. Both have their major devotees outside of company doors, but how do the actual employees of both companies feel about the people they work for? Do workers from Riot Games and Blizzard Entertainment like the job their leadership is doing? Let’s take another look at what Comparably’s<\/a> employee-submitted data tells us about life behind-the-scenes, this time behind closed doors at two video game titans.<\/p>\n

OVERALL CULTURE<\/p>\n

Employees rated Blizzard\u2019s<\/a> culure 12 points higher than competitor Riot Games. One worker says that Blizzard \u201cputs an emphasis on culture. They encourage us to embrace and openly share our passions. The people here are generally happy and positive.\u201d <\/b>Another writes that morale is\u00a0\u201cgenerally high because people are passionate about working here. But a frequent complaint is not being paid fairly compared to other companies. (There is a trade off for a fun culture, team events, etc. You don’t come here to get great paycheck, you come here to enjoy your job<\/strong><\/b>).\u201d<\/p>\n

A worker from Riot Games<\/a> writes that \u201cthe culture is one of feedback. The idea of only being able to fix things that they know are a problem. That said, not all departments are as open to this as they should be.\u201d <\/strong><\/b>Another writes that\u00a0\u201cThe culture is broken but my immediate team really goes out of their way to be an example of what good looks like – and we celebrate each others wins.\u201d <\/strong><\/b>A third writes,\u201cI\u2019m friends with most of my team outside of work.\u201d<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

CEO<\/p>\n

Blizzard\u2019s CEO J. Allen Brack topped ratings for Riot CEO Brandon Beck by 14 points.<\/p>\n

About Blizzard\u2019s Brack, one employee writes, \u201cHe is a down-to-earth, accessible man<\/b>.\u201d About leadership in general, another writes, \u201cThey make an effort to be reachable from all levels of the company. <\/b>A third writes that leadership at Blizzard is\u201cfully committed to leveling up employees, always encouraging, always supportive.<\/b><\/p>\n

About Riot leadership, one employee writes, \u201cFix the bro culture. Mark and Brandon need to take ownership of the culture they created. Do what\u2019s right, not what\u2019s easy.\u201d <\/b><\/strong>On the plus side, another worker writes ,\u201cThe leadership team apologizes openly when they’ve made a mistake and don’t couch it in excuses.<\/b><\/strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

COMPENSATION<\/p>\n

Again, Blizzard took the prize, but this time by a small margin of 5 percentage points.<\/p>\n

A Blizzard employee writes, \u201cI pinch myself everyday that I get to earn what I earn. Bonuses are very motivating, as well.\u201d <\/b>Another adds,\u201cTake home pay is on the lower end of expected pay for my position. However with profit sharing, tuition reimbursement and quality benefits, it’s not too bad.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

For Riot, an employee says that\u201cwages for creative just aren’t as good as they claim<\/strong><\/b>\u201d and that the company should\u00a0\u201cpay talent better.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

PERKS & BENEFITS<\/p>\n

Only two points separate Blizzard\u2019s once-again winning score \u2013 this time for compensation \u2013 from Riot\u2019s runner-up.<\/p>\n

From Blizzard, one employee writes, \u201cFit-bit intensives are great, all my glasses were paid with the health intensive.\u201d <\/b>Another worker writes that\u00a0\u201cthe health benefits are reasonable, including incentives to stay healthy.\u201d <\/b>One employee also writes that the company should but does not offer an \u201copportunity to earn stock option rewards.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

An employee from Riot writes that the company offers \u201cHealth\/dental\/vision, 401k with matching, unlimited PTO, gym subsidy, free food, and a video game purchasing fund<\/b>.\u201d<\/p>\n

GENDER<\/p>\n

\"Blizzard<\/p>\n

Blizzard takes the title easily for Gender, which measures female workers\u2019 opportunities at each company.<\/p>\n

About Riot\u2019s culture for women, the word is dire: one employee says the culture is \u201ctoxic as hell, especially if you\u2019re a woman.\u201d <\/b>Another says, \u201cAt the moment my team is about 20% women.\u201d<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

DIVERSITY<\/p>\n

Again, Blizzard\u2019s employees have rated their company high, this time for Diversity. Riot\u2019s score trailed by 14 points.<\/p>\n

For Blizzard, an employee writes us, \u201cWe are diverse and open to more diversity. We strive to better ourselves, the company, and our customer experiences.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n
