What is it like to work for one of the big U.S. healthcare companies? How well-compensated are workers in the healthcare industry? Five of the biggest and richest U.S. Healthcare companies \u2013 Aetna<\/b>, Anthem<\/b>, HCA Healthcare<\/b>, Medtronic<\/b> and UnitedHealth<\/b> \u2013 go head-to-head in the realm of company culture\u00a0for today\u2019s Culture\u00a0Showdown. We looked at Comparably\u2019s<\/a> employee-submitted data for overall culture and five other categories to determine where someone looking for a career in the Healthcare Industry might go first if they want to work for a company that takes great care of its employees.<\/p>\n

OVERALL CULTURE<\/p>\n

\"Screen<\/p>\n

Anthem: \u201cThey take a big company and make it feel like a personal company.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Aetna: \u201cWhile they talk a lot about culture, at Aetna there really isn\u2019t one.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

HCA Healthcare: \u201c<\/b>They do a good job of planning fun events for employees and also giving back to our community.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Medtronic: \u201c<\/b>There is an upbeat air. Innovation and cooperation is the culture.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

UnitedHealth Group: \u201c<\/b>There are a ton of offices and so it really depends on which office you are in. I’ve been in a number of them and all generally have the same professional, positive vibe.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

CEO<\/p>\n

\"Screen<\/p>\n

Anthem: \u201cShe is experienced and knows her department duties well.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Aetna: \u201cThere is no compassion for the employees.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

HCA Healthcare: \u201cThis is the most sophisticated leadership team I\u2019ve been exposed to.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Medtronic: \u201c<\/b>He’s super smart and a future-facing thought leader. He’s very thoughtful about the career paths of the employees.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

UnitedHealth Group: \u201cNeeds to come down from the clouds to where the real folks reside.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

COMPENSATION<\/p>\n

\"Screen<\/p>\n

Anthem: \u201cFor all the requirements of my job, I feel I should be paid more.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Aetna: \u201cVery underpaid and raises\/bonuses are not worth anything.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

HCA Healthcare: \u201cNurses in other states make more with less experience.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Medtronic: \u201cAnnual raises and competitive wages.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

UnitedHealth Group: \u201c<\/b>It is a fair compensation, although I have seen other employees not get paid fairly or raise when they gain a new degree or specialty.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

PERKS & BENEFITS<\/p>\n

\"Screen<\/p>\n

Anthem: \u201cThe annual incentive plan can come out to a significant amount of money.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Aetna: \u201cTuition reimbursement, student loan assistance, and wellness programs.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

HCA Healthcare: \u201cThe 401k match. I\u2019ve been here for 27 years. HCA matches 9% for me!\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Medtronic: \u201cRetirement, time off, tuition reimbursement, health insurance.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

UnitedHealth Group: \u201c<\/b>The medical is okay but it’s not great. Currently the plan without an HSA covers 80% of eligible expenses after satisfying a $1100.00 deductible.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

DIVERSITY<\/p>\n

Anthem: \u201cWe are very diverse and I enjoy meeting new people.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

HCA Healthcare: \u201cI\u2019m proud to say I think the team I\u2019m on in is wonderfully diverse.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Medtronic: \u201cThere are strategies to improve representation for ethnicities and women.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

UnitedHealth Group: \u201cVery little diversity at Associate Director level and above.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

OUTLOOK<\/p>\n

\"Screen<\/p>\n

HCA Healthcare wins another category here with Outlook. That makes four wins total,\u00a0which means HCA wins the whole Showdown<\/b>. In fact, the only categories HCA didn\u2019t win for today\u2019s Culture Showdown were Perks & Benefits (which went to Aetna) and\u00a0Compensation (which went to Medtronic.) There\u2019s no doubt that HCA has the most\u00a0satisfied employees, if this match-up is any indication.<\/p>\n

Looking quickly at the other companies, we can see its good news that Aetna won the Perks category, as it got straight C\u2019s from its employees in every other category. Anthem got mostly B\u2019s. Finally, UHG and Medtronic had grades that were generally all over the map, suggesting some areas need improvement and others are satisfactory.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
