Money is to an extent a factor here, of course, as someone who can afford good, substantial child care can manage to put their focus on their job when they need to. But an honest, impassioned career and the raising of a beloved child require b0th require an overwhelming amount of personal, meaningful involvement. And just how much does any one person have? And this isn&#8217;t even taking into account the judgments and prejudices of others, who may or may not have gone through similar experiences. We asked employees, &#8220;Do you think having children holds people back in their careers?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This information comes courtesy of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/culture\/tech\/all-departments\/164-do-you-think-having-children-holds-people-back-in-their-careers\">ongoing study<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparably.com\">Comparably<\/a>. Over 1,000 employees responded to the question.<\/p>\n<p><b>More than half of both male and female respondents said that they didn\u2019t think having a child held people back in their careers.<\/b>57% of men don\u2019t think children are a career-killer, and 55% of women agree.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8530 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/child-gender.png\" alt=\"child (gender\" width=\"916\" height=\"88\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/child-gender-300x29.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/child-gender-768x74.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/child-gender.png 916w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Nearly half of Asian\/Pacific Islander respondents think children have a negative effect on career.<\/b>Hispanic\/Latinos were close behind, and also responded at an average level higher than overall male and female respodents. Caucasian responses came in right between male and feamle responses. Half of respondents from the Design, Legal, Engineering, and Product departments felt children could hold back one\u2019s career. Less concerned were employees from the IT, Sales, Business Development and HR departments.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8533 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/child-dept.png\" alt=\"child (dept\" width=\"922\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/child-dept-300x152.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/child-dept-768x390.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/child-dept.png 922w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Women in Communications were nearly twice as convinced as men in that department that having children could jeopardize career growth.\u00a0<\/b>Other major discrepanices exist in Admin (where men were 10% more likely to say that having children could hurt a career) and Engineering (women said \u2018yes\u2019 15% more than men.) Before they hit 30, more than half of employees assume that a child would take their career off course. As age advances, respondents become less and less convinced that having a child is a roadblock to career success, hitting a low with the 51-55 age group \u2013 only 35% of whom think being a parent and having a b career momentum can\u2019t go hand in hand. This may be a result of those repsondents having had children themselves: once this question moves from the abstract (\u201cI\u2019ll bet having a kid would mess up my career\u201d) to the lived (\u201cI did just fine in my career, and raised some great kids, too\u201d), responses become far less harsh.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8535 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/child-age.png\" alt=\"child (age\" width=\"924\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/child-age-300x73.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/child-age-768x186.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/child-age.png 924w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>We see an almost opposite effect from the above age chart when we look at education level. <\/b>Most respondents, no matter what level of education they complete, answered \u201cyes\u201d to the question in the mid-40s range.
