How do employees at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/companies\/emc\">DellEMC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/companies\/sap\">SAP<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/companies\/splunk\">Splunk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/companies\/teradata-corporation\">Teradata<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparably.com\/companies\/vmware\">VMWare<\/a> feel about the cultures of the companies they work for? We used <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comparably.com\">Comparably&#8217;s<\/a> employee-submitted reviews and ratings to paint a picture of how satisfied the employees of these Big Data companies are. SAP scored well, also in the A range. Teradata and DellEMC don&#8217;t have similarly sturdy cultures, at least according to these employees&#8217; opinions.<\/p>\n<p><b>DellEMC: <\/b>\u201cI would be more strict on who and when people can work from home. If you reduce the amount of time people actually interact with each other, it is difficult to have a sustained culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>SAP: <\/b>\u201cSAP embraces employee diversity, equal pay\/equal opportunity, the company focuses on continuing to expand the percentage of women in leadership positions (currently ~25%, next target to hit 33% soon), and SAP isn&#8217;t an &#8216;evil company&#8217; &#8211; SAP has military veteran and autism spectrum hiring programs and the company supports many social programs, giving employees the opportunity to donate their time to support local charity and non-profit organizations (during work hours).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Splunk: <\/b>\u201cHighly pressurized work environment. Minimal training phase before a very heavy work loads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Teradata: <\/b>\u201cThe culture has been improving over the last couple years but still has a ways to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>VMWare: <\/b>\u201cI love our Corporate Culture. All five of the CEOs above scored reasonably well, with only Teradata&#8217;s Oliver Ratzesberger DellEMC&#8217;s Michael Dell flirting with less-than-passing grades.<\/p>\n<p><b>DellEMC: <\/b>\u201cOverall, they have a very positive impression for the CEO. The simulation between the Dell and EMC employees took some time, but the majority believe it is getting there. It is a huge company with over 100,000 employees, so there are always going to be ups and downs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>SAP: <\/b>\u201cI think most people see Bill as an inspirational and driven leader. He is outstanding with clients, and is an amzingly optimistic person. His book provides fair insight into his personality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Splunk: <\/b>\u201cLeadership are acutely aware of where the industry is heading. They continually upgrade &amp; invent Splunk solutions to keep this company as the go to leader in the Security analytics &amp; ITOA industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Teradata: <\/b>\u201cI appreciate Oliver&#8217;s commitment to Inclusion &amp; Diversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>VMWare: \u201c<\/b>Pat is awesome and very personable. A pleasure to listen to. I know things could be improved, I&#8217;m just not sure how. SAP and Splunk also distinguish themselves in the Compensation category, with Teradata and DellEMC rating scores closer to average.<\/p>\n<p><b>DellEMC: <\/b>\u201cStock\/RSU compensation is very poor. That robs employees of wealth in the long term compared to their peers working for other tech companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>SAP: <\/b>\u201cBase and commission are equally weighted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Splunk: <\/b>\u201cWould like to be able to increase my base salary. My OTE has been the same for the last 5 years. Splunk also scored very well here, with SAP not far behind. DellEMC and Taradata get passing grades but employees don&#8217;t seem to feel much enthusiasm for either company&#8217;s paychecks here in \u00a0the Compensation category.<\/p>\n<p><b>DellEMC: <\/b>\u201cSo there is medical, dental, vision, 401k, for your kids there is college coaching and merit scholarships possible, we also get Dell EMC discounts for our personal purchase. And almost forgot, there is some funds available for tuition assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>SAP: <\/b>\u201cLots of company events, activities and local events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Splunk: <\/b>\u201cA lot of holidays, a lot of pto, good amount of sick days, volunteer days, rsus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Teradata: <\/b>\u201cTeradata has an unlimited vacation policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>VMWare: <\/b>\u201cAll employees have access to the standard benefits that all large companies provide, healthcare, 401k, stock purchase plans, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>DIVERSITY<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8550 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-06-at-2.50.08-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2019-05-06 at 2.50.08 PM\" width=\"1430\" height=\"756\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-06-at-2.50.08-PM-300x159.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-06-at-2.50.08-PM-768x406.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-06-at-2.50.08-PM-1024x541.png 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.comparably.com\/00000000\/b\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-06-at-2.50.08-PM.png 1430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A rout begins to firm up for VMWare, who are the only company among our five to rate in the A range for Diversity, which measures how employees of color feel about their jobs and companies. SAP, Splunk, and Teradata rate solid Bs, but DellEMC gets the worst score for any company we&#8217;ve seen yet today with a C-. More effort and an evidence of diversity initiative is certainly expected, especially from a tech giant.<\/p>\n<p><b>DellEMC: <\/b>\u201cI work in sales &amp; pre-sales, and there are plenty of men and women of all ages and ethnicities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>SAP: <\/b>\u201cOur team is very diverse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Splunk: <\/b>\u201cThey are diverse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Teradata: <\/b>\u201cOpen, supportive of inclusion and diversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>VMWare: \u201c<\/b>I feel it is diverse enough. We learn a lot from each other and lead clients to the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>VMWare: <\/b>\u201cI like the autonomy I&#8217;m given and the variety of challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VMWare&#8217;s employees are righteously enthused about where their company is going and are thrilled to be along for the ride. They win their fifth trophy today in the Outlook category and that means <b>VMWare wins today. <\/b>Those with an interested in Big\u00a0Data would do\u00a0well to look into\u00a0opportunities at VMWare and also at SAP, who scored a slightly lower A+ rating for Outlook. Splunk also seems to offer some evidence of a healthy\u00a0modern cultures, but work needs do be done\u00a0in that regard at both DellEMC and Teradata if\u00a0they don&#8217;t want to start\u00a0hemhorraging talented employees to other tech companies<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We examine the company cultures of five companies involved in the Big Data industry today.
