Dr. Mark B. McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., is Director of the Health Policy Center at Duke University. He is also a visiting Faculty Member at Harvard Business School and the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas. He served as a Special Advisor of General Atlantic LLC. Dr. McClellan joined General Atlantic LLC in 2009 and works closely with the healthcare sector. He was a Senior Fellow in Economic Studies, Director of the Health Care Innovation and Value Initiative and the Leonard D. Schaeffer Director's Chair in Health Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution. Within Brookings, his work focuses on promoting quality and value in patient-centered health care. He served as a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, Inc. He served as a Commissioner of FDA. Dr. McClellan served as a Member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers and served as a Senior Director for Health Care Policy at the White House from 2001 to 2002. He served as a Member of the National Cancer Policy Board of the National Academy of Sciences. From 2004 to 2006, he served as an Administrator at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where he was responsible for administering the Medicare and Medicaid programs, including Medicare Part D, the prescription drug benefit program engendered by the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act. In the Clinton administration, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for economic policy from 1998 to 1999 and supervised economic analysis and policy development on a range of domestic policy issues. From 2002 to 2004, he served as the Commissioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration, following unanimous Senate confirmation, where he developed and implemented major reforms in health policy. He has been Vice Chairman of Advisory Board at American Well Corporation since May 31, 2016. He serves as a Director of the Engleberg Center for Health Reform. He has been a Director of ArborMetrix, Inc. since March 5, 2014. He is Director of the Duke-Robert J. Margolis, MD, Center for Health Policy. He has been an Independent Director of Johnson & Johnson since October 15, 2013. He serves as a Director of USDS, Inc. Dr. McClellan serves as a Member of the Advisory Board of Extend Health, Inc. He was an Associate Editor of the Journal of Health Economics and co-Principal Investigator of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). He serves as a Senior Fellow and Director of the Health Care Innovation and Value Initiative at the Engelberg Center for Health Reform. He is actively involved in healthcare technology, policy and economics. He serves as a Member of Advisory Boards of the National Institute on Aging, the American Heart Association and Research America. He chairs the Board of the Reagan-Udall Foundation for the FDA. He served as Chairman and Director of Reagan Udall Foundation. He is a Director at National Quality Forum. He served as the Co-Chair of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Commission to Build a Healthier America. He has twice received the Kenneth Arrow Award for Outstanding Research in Health Economics. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. He completed his residency training in internal medicine at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital and has been a board-certified practicing internist during his career. Dr. McClellan was a Visiting Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. Dr. McClellan has a highly distinguished record in public service and in academic research. He is a doctor and economist by training. Dr. McClellan holds a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT in 1993, M.D. from the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology in 1992, M.P.A. from the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government in 1991 and BA from the University of Texas at Austin.
