Q&A With Warner Media Employees

They say that they take the best parts of Amazon, Google, and Microsoft but the worst parts of those cultures come out day to day in a Game of Thrones way. Highly political, lots of unchecked nepotism.

  • Leadership is very insular, controlling, and not growth oriented. Nepotism, backstabbing, and telling lies about employees by the leads is the norm. If someone is a threat to the employees protected by the mgmt chain, they're isolated, disrespectfully treated, and managed out swiftly.

  • it depends on who you are and what department you're in. If you're low on the totem pole you're going to be at your desk every day. If you gain some trust, they might let you work outside of the office.

I think they'd say that they're very innovative but that innovation has gone down over time. They tend to want to stamp out different versions of one show. Oh, a role-playing show works for one group, let's make four more. Let's take more audio and make an animation out of it. Even shows that are live-action cartoons to begin with, end up getting cartoon versions. There's a lot of that type of thinking inside of the organization. There's also a distinct lack of interest in the world outside of the company. Writers and directors who have never had a job outside of Rooster Teeth think more highly of themselves than they probably should which helps create a mindset that isn't interested in things that aren't created by them. That causes the people making the decisions in those departments to miss out on lots of opportunities.

  • It depends on whether or not you're an on-camera 'celebrity' or a regular employee. There are many exemptions for bad behavior by the 'talent'. That could just be because there's a club of 'friends' or because the company generally thinks that the talent are more important. The actual HR experience tends to be very carrot and stick. HR will be your friend until there's a problem and then afterward they tow the company line. They're basically the company's enforcers. Good people, but enforcers.

Preguntado a la Business Development Department at Warner Media

  • WB produces the most film and TV product in Hollywood, so the leadership thinks at scale. They tend to be cautious about unintended consequences, so there's a good amount of analysis required before making major decisions. The reason for this is their market leadership in terms of volume - it makes sense to protect their scale.
