What are the team outings like at BuzzFeed?
Everything has to do with beer.
How's the vacation policy at BuzzFeed?
In the US, 3 weeks (15 days) PTO plus 1 floating holiday and your birthday off. 12 paid holiday days, and unlimited sick time. In other countries, it varies, but is generally one week more than the country's minimum from what I can tell.
How does BuzzFeed make decisions around promotions?
You need to befriend someone in upper management. Generally, even if you're not very skilled, you'll make out fine in terms of career growth if you have a personal relationship with someone higher than you in the latter. Go skiing with someone, graduate (have graduated) from their alma mater, and/or laugh at their jokes. Upward mobility is damn-near impossible and requires some luck, despite the recently formed career latter in each department. You're better off leaving, taking on a bigger role somewhere, and coming back.
How many women are in your team? is it diverse enough?
probably around 20% female engineers, 35% of tech as a whole are women. we need more women represented in senior engineering and management. also the tech team as a whole is pretty pale and we need to work on it.
How do the current devs on the team act towards new developers that join?
really friendly and generous
what's your workflow? agile? waterfall?
6-week "sixer" sprints. i guess it's modified agile. nobody uses waterfall it's 2017
