Dr. Richard J. Benjamin, M.D., MBChB, Ph.D. has been Chief Medical Officer of Cerus Corporation since July 13, 2015. Dr. Benjamin served as the chief medical officer at the American Red Cross since 2006. He oversaw the American Red Cross's donor and patient safety issues related to blood collection and transfusion. He served as a Member of Scientific Advisory Board of Immucor Inc. since November 2005. Dr. Benjamin served as a Member of Scientific Advisory Board of Point Therapeutics Inc. and served as its Director since July 7, 2004. He served as a Director of DARA BioSciences, Inc., until February 2008. Prior to joining the Red Cross, Dr. Benjamin served as a medical director at the Adult Transfusion Service at the Joint Program in Transfusion Medicine at Harvard University. Dr. Benjamin is well-versed in the INTERCEPT technology and previously served as an investigator in U.S Phase III studies for INTERCEPT platelets, plasma and red blood cells. Dr. Benjamin was a sub-investigator on Cerus??? Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) study for treatment of convalescent plasma collected from Ebola disease survivors for passive immune therapy within the United States. He is a board member and regional director for North America for the International Society of Blood Transfusion, as well as an active member of the AABB. He is an adjunct associate professor of pathology at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He serves as an Assistant Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and is a member of the Joint Program in Transfusion Medicine. His research is focused clinically on technologies to improve the safety and efficacy of transfusion. He serves as on the U.S Department of Health and Human Service's Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability. He received his PhD in immunology from Cambridge University in England. Dr. Benjamin's medical degree is from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He undertook completed his post-doctoral studies on the molecular mechanisms of antigen presentation at Stanford University, before initiating Hematopathology and Transfusion Medicine training at the Brigham and Womens Hospital.
