Chief Operating Officer of South African Operations
Mr. Beyers Nel, BSc, BEng, MBA, has been Chief Operating Officer of the South African Operations at Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited since March 1, 2016. Mr. Nel has 15 years of experience in gold mining 13 years at Harmony - gained on a variety of opencast, deep and ultra-deep gold mines in both supervisory and management positions. He served as Regional General Manager of Target, Phakisa and Tshepong Mines at Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited from July 1, 2014 to March 1, 2016. He served as Operating officer of Tshepong, Kusasalethu, Phakisa and Doornkop at Harmony Gold Mining Co. Ltd. Mr. Nel is one of Harmony's operating officers for South Africa, with specific responsibility for the key growth assets of Phakisa, Tshepong, Doornkop and Kusasalethu as well as Kalgold. He has been with Harmony Gold Mining Co. Ltd. for over a decade, builds on his technical mining experience in opencast and underground applications and moves steadily through the ranks from production foreman to his current management role for the South African operations. Under his leadership as General Manager, the teams at Phakisa and Kalgold received internal and external awards for performance and safety. He serves as the vice president of the Association of Mine Managers of South Africa. Along with his operational responsibilities, he has completed several management development programmes with honours, including an international exchange programme to the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business. Mr. Nel holds a B. Eng (Mining Engineering), MBA and is a registered professional engineer (Pr. Eng).
