Good people and interesting tech to work with. Company is always laying people -- really good performers -- off to make quarter numbers. Ten percent of workforce was laid off in 2023. It gets depressing.

How does Dolby Laboratories make decisions around promotions?
They stretch it out for years
Sometimes you are punished for delivering good work. Promotions come from politics and connections. Not results.
How difficult is it to maintain a social life while in your job at Dolby Laboratories?
Not hard at all.
Very difficult lately. Usually very good though.
What's the pay like for Engineering roles at Dolby Laboratories?
Below average.
Was good. Now quickly declining with the recent decrease in stock offerings.
How's the leadership on the Engineering team at Dolby Laboratories?
Not good. Seriously. Why can't we hire more qualified people. Not just people who can talk?
Depends on which group. Some groups really lack leadership and I don’t know how it isn’t obvious to their bosses.
If you could make changes, how would you improve the culture at Dolby Laboratories?
People who are obviously under performers, who time and time again almost refuse to do their job should just be let go. Other than that, stop with the layoffs based on headcount. Emphasis on improving management (consultants to teach the managers wouldn't hurt here). More leadership to help get rid of the political culture. More emphasis on results.

Great for 10 years. Eventually, the company decided to run lean and my function was reporting to someone that had no idea about what we do. They devalued the function and 90% of us left.
What should I wear for an interview at Dolby Laboratories?
For an Engineering interview, business casual is fine. Dolby, like other companies in the SF/Bay Area/Silicon Valley is business casual, and sometimes more towards the casual side.
How's the vacation policy at Dolby Laboratories?
Usually can take time off whenever you like, except when there are unrealistic schedules making you work many hours, and with no chance to take PTO.

We provide feedback but sometimes management doesn't know how to resolve the standing issues.

Cultural fit.
How secure do you feel at your job at Dolby Laboratories?
Not secure at all. Stop with the layoffs every 2 years. If there is an issue then stop hiring externally, especially poorly qualified people. (This keeps happening). I believe a more structured and better vetted out system of hiring is needed to help fight this.
What's the best part of your job at Dolby Laboratories?
Learning a lot. Working on interesting products.

Depends on group. Demand for fast paced movement can be overbearing when political situation hampers efficiency.
How much and how often do raises happen at Dolby Laboratories?
Yearly but the amount of the raises are becoming less and less, and subpar.

Tired of the excessive hours, and hopeless political situation.
What's the office layout like at Dolby Laboratories?
Open office. REALLY don't like this as an Engineer. Way to cheap out on the office. Why couldn't Engineers stay the way the offices were in 999 Brannan? That was a lot better for my work efficiency.
