Everyone I've interacted with at GitHub is extremely nice, smart, and very open and willing to help out.
How do I do well in an interview at GitHub?
Be prepared (research GitHub, our product, and your interviewers). Ask questions. Be curious. Think about how your work impacts the outside world and the greater good.

How would you describe your overall experience interviewing at GitHub?

It was streamlined and fantastic. I met with a great group of key stakeholders who were passionate, smart, and engaged throughout the discussions.
Very positive.
It was comfortable and filled with engaging conversations. We talked more at a philosophical level. This was a couple of years ago when we were smaller and still growing the function.
How long do the interviews usually take at GitHub?
They are usually in 30 min, 45 min, or 60 min segments. Some paired exercises can go as long as 2 hours.
It really depends on the role. Most of them are 30 to 60 minute segments broken into multiple stages.
It varies from role to role, but we are striving for a three step process for most roles with a goal of making a hiring decision in 30-60 days.

Great.
It is casual. There is a good energy at HQ.

It is pretty normal. Most follow the following format: 1) Talent Partner phone screen, 2) Hiring Manager/Team Lead and stakeholder interviews, 3) final round with key stakeholders and skip level. The majority of the interview processes include a written exercise at some point.

The interview process can be long-- but overall, it's a great experience
If you could make changes, how would you improve the culture at GitHub?
To work towards action instead of spiraling down the path of letting everyone voice their opinion and things spinning further than they should.
Nothing major comes to mind. Keep collecting feedback, iterating, with the goal of moving forward to make it better.
Built off the great aspects that have existed -- but mature in the overall approach to building the business.
What do people at GitHub think about the CEO? What do they do well and what can they improve?
We are in the process of searching for a new CEO.
There is a lot of respect for the CEO. Chris is very passionate about GitHub and the developer community.
Chris is an original founder and has done a lot to build a solid company.

It is great.

We have two parts: 1) Individual user, and 2) enterprise. Both of which are growing quite well.
the number of employees has jumped considerably over the past couple of years. Some of the infrastructure of the company is still catching up though to support a large company.
the SJW component is not gaining steam as before.
What should I wear for an interview at GitHub?
Be yourself. Be comfortable. No matter where you interview, you want to put your best foot forward and leave a positive impression. You would feel uncomfortable in a suit and tie.

It has been over three years since I interviewed.
How would you compare interviewing at GitHub to other places you've interviewed?
It was a very enjoyable experience. I felt like the conversations got to the core of the matter but were pleasant and collegial.
It was great. I had really thoughtful discussions with everyone that I chatted with. I knew I had to be a part of the company.

What's the company culture like at GitHub?
Overall, I find it to be a great work experience. It is transparent and collaborative. I feel there is a focus on things other than work like diversity and inclusion and our social impact.

It is based on feedback collected in the review process. It is a 360 process.

How challenged are you at GitHub?
I am very challenged - both in terms of volume of work and the juiciness of the work.
I am very challenged as there are a lot of things to do in terms of process improvement and having a direct impact. We are fairly small and experience hyper growth. Lots of ways to make improvements and tap into my past experience and skills.
How's the work pace at GitHub?
I find that you are able to have a good work life balance here. It is fast and intense, but I am continually surprised at how I have been able to set reasonable boundaries.
It is brisk, but not overwhelming.
What's the best part of your job at GitHub?
Representing such a great organization that will be doing important and fantastic work going forward. The community we have built and the passion for us is unlike any other company that I have worked for.

They are a combination of planning, team building, community service, and fun.
Depends on the team outing. Some are merely for bonding and team building and tend to be more fun. Others are more driven my planning sessions. Some are a mix of both.
