IT leadership is extremely lacking. The new CIO seems to be a practising CIO, no prior experience. Same with some of her direct reports. Extremely cliquey culture in IT. Infrastructure side leadership is very political and cliquey. Folks hanging there since years. HR is not helpful.

  • Mixed. A lot of changes happening both internally and externally in the industry that is impacting morale in terms of general business downturn and concern of impending downsizing as a result. However, some departments have great morale and are made of up of the finest professionals I've ever worked with.

  • There is some resistance/rigidity to big change, especially among some of the long-time execs. There wasn't quite the appetite for investment in innovation as I had thought there was.

  • Be confident, understand and be knowledgeable about your craft. Be honest.

  • Prepare using the STAR method (Situation/Task/Action/Result) and also just be yourself. Try to relax but have command of the key highlights (and lowlights) of your career. Be open, honest and forthcoming about things your not as comfortable with. Ask for questions to be restated if you don't understand them and don't try to BS the interviewer.

  • Much more informal/laid back than other companies like Amazon, Microsoft, or Google. If you've interviewed at one of those tech companies before, you will be more than prepared for an interview at SPE.

  • Dress professionally

  • Depends on the role but business casual is generally the way to go. Higher level position interviewees should go a bit more formal (suit and tie for men or just suit, dress shirt and no tie). Nice jeans with a sport jacket, dress shirt, dress shoes would be acceptable as well.

  • Good overall. Where as some cultures are 24/7 with emails and messages, SPE is generally 9-6, M-F and there is encouragement from the top for people to set their own boundaries and prioritize their life accordingly.

  • The balance can vary pretty heavily by season, dept and boss. However, generally the good bosses are aware for the need to keep it within reason. Work hard and you'll get the time off you deserve.

  • Interview questions and style varies widely department by department. Some groups are more formal than others. I generally found that many people at SPE do not have any formal interview training, so you would get a lot of, "Tell me about yourself?" or "What accomplishment are you most proud of?" To be fully prepared as an interviewee, I suggest the STAR method which is good for organizing responses to typical interviewer questions. Example: give an example of a situation where...,? What was your task/objective? What direct actions did you take? What were the results?

  • This seems to be arbitrary but loosely based on performance and tenure. Direct-revenue-generating positions tend to be promoted faster than non-revenue-generating positions like more technical, R&D roles. However there are very few promotions from Exec Director to VP and fewer from VP to SVP (unless role is tied to revenue).

  • Yes. Some sales positions are away from HQ, however all core functions and roles are in Culver City. Officially, everyone in HQ has a flex-work day each month where they can work outside the office, however some managers are much more flexible with this with their direct reports and allow other flex-work days at their discretion.
