Layoffs are happening even in strategic areas like cloud, analytics, Watson, etc., not just the old line hardware and service businesses. So it's hard to stay positive when you're always looking over your shoulder wondering if you're next. Leaders and board at IBM invest like it's a low-growth, old line manufacturing company and don't seem to have a clue about how tech industry dynamics work.
Can be pretty poor. Layoffs are happening about every 6 months. IBM likes to just "shake the tree" periodically, shedding talent just to see if it can get more productivity out of the remaining workers. It also habitually underfunds initiatives (both development and marketing) so it's incredibly difficult to be successful in a rapidly changing tech world. It becomes demoralizing.
Honestly, it's terrible. Once a great company. Current executives have killed it. Sales reps on 6 month numbers. You don't make your 1st or 2nd have number, you're gone. Doesn't matter how many years of outperformance you have. Massive layoffs but yet CEO gets huge compensation... Sad state over at IBM right now.
For marketing - it has never been worse. Colocation is forcing long distance relocation without guarantee of a job retained over a period of time. New hires are unskilled in IBM-ish-ness and lost sheep. Personal networks, which in the past were global and highly effective, have fallen apart.
This is very dependent on which group you work in. Hardware, Software, & Services are all very different and within each of those groups morale differs. The morale where I work is great. People are getting trained, having fun working in new technologies, and affecting positive change for their clients.
Everyone with any substantial experience (a high band) or whom is over 50 is always looking over their shoulder for the next "resource action" or other reason that they will be axed.
