Everyone can do everything. We have specialized people, but that knowledge is shared. There's always the best "expert" for a certain topic, however, they are expected to not be the only person that can do the work.
It's hard to tell how good a developer is at coding with an interview. Essentially, anyone who can talk the talk gets a 6 week chance to walk the walk. Far easier to evaluate their skill with a no risk trial period.
Nobody gets burned at the stake. Everyone makes mistakes. When something goes wrong, we do a great job of ensuring everyone that they won't be fired for the mistake. Just let others know what happened to the best of your knowledge so we can fix it.
