How would you describe your overall experience interviewing at NYC Department of Education?
Short and direct. I was hired as a temp for an executive assistant position and had a single interview with my would-be boss. He had specific focused questions and didn't draw the process out. I however, had my own questions and I asked to speak to the person who previously held the job--who had subsequently been promoted in the same office. Since an assistant job is intensely interpersonal it was important to me to get an "inside view" of how my future boss works and behaves. I think both my boss and the former assistant were surprised at my request but impressed as well. It showed I was serious about "vetting" them as well as vice versa

Business casual. only top management dresses corporate the rest are less formal. Practical, low key, not too much in the way of politics, everyone gets along. hierarchic and very process oriented and can be bureaucratic but that's the nature of government; your job is to make the process go smoothly. And you have responsibility to prevent fraud, ensure quality services to citizens etc which everyone takes seriously. My building is 1950s cubicle-ville. Dull and kinda depressing but the nice people make it ok.
