How does NFL make decisions around promotions?
As part of an official annual process, your manager first must submit a lengthy (pages of forms and short/long -form questions) nomination to promote you, and if that's done hastily or your boss lacks clout in the organization generally, you will be starting the process at a material disadvantage. Next, you undergo a 1-on-1 personality assessment conducted by an outside agency who weeks later delivers a detailed 15-page analysis of who you are deep down as a person, just solely from the perspective of a major corporation. Then, on an unknown timeline, an unknown group of more senior people reviews your recent performance assessments (focusing primarily on the truly arbitrary "scores" calculated at the end of each year) along with your manager's nomination form and that pesky personality assessment before delivering a simple yes or no decision via your manager. Any raise is determined by an opaque formula that considers your years of experience and the new role's hierarchical rank.
