It's very common. Once your foot is in the door, you decide the direction and duration of your career. If you start as MT in rental, but you've got an accounting degree or prefer to work in an accounting department, keep an eye out for openings. HR sends out job openings group wide every day! If you ask HR, they can also keep you apprised to openings elsewhere, just tell them you're looking for which department in which group. A woman I know personally started in rental, eventually becoming an area manager, moved to HR for a bit, then she decided to throw her hat in the ring for a Remarketing Account Manager opening.... selling off deletes. So yes, it's common to move around until you find your niche in the company.
Spots open only so often locally. If you want to move elsewhere you have a better shot.
Extremely common to escape harassment from people in charge of others.
