There's little churn in middle-management and you'll never be given an opportunity to work on projects that improve your skills. If you have the personal time to invest in online training, you can move sideways into better paying jobs pretty easily and then move on to more profitable companies. This happens frequently in our Networking and Security Teams. Sales people who learn the lingo and how to work with high-end clients have been known to move on to companies like RedHat/IBM and SUSE.

The company does try to grow from within, but you don't magically get a promotion because you've been there a long time. You do need to prepare to be a good candidate for the job you want. Gain some skills, get ready, become a strong candidate you will find opportunities to grow.
