Learn the basics and show an ability to troubleshoot and speak to people

  • Depends on the role. For support it is important to learn the basics of Linux or Windows administration (whichever you are applying for.) There are a number of free courses that you can take to help you out with Linux through edx.org and other sites. Really though, be passionate about technology and willing to show it.

  • Actually have the skills and abilities listed in the position advertisement, because you will have to prove your knowledge during the interview process.

The company does try to grow from within, but you don't magically get a promotion because you've been there a long time. You do need to prepare to be a good candidate for the job you want. Gain some skills, get ready, become a strong candidate you will find opportunities to grow.

  • There's little churn in middle-management and you'll never be given an opportunity to work on projects that improve your skills. If you have the personal time to invest in online training, you can move sideways into better paying jobs pretty easily and then move on to more profitable companies. This happens frequently in our Networking and Security Teams. Sales people who learn the lingo and how to work with high-end clients have been known to move on to companies like RedHat/IBM and SUSE.

Liquid Web has a great HR team. There are 5 HR staff on site in the Lansing office and they travel to other locations as needed. There is always someone available to help you sort things out and they are very easy to talk to.

  • In a respectful, confidential and personal manner. The HR team is accessible and responsive, also seem to try to be helpful... and not just "this is the policy".
