2022 Internships and Where to Find Them

Like almost everything else surrounding life in business, internships have also had to evolve or at least temporarily transform into sometimes virtual internships. Those looking ahead to 2022 internships can start here with these 7 companies, which have all responded thoughtfully when we asked about what their internship programs offered and how they may have changed over the last year or so.

Farmers Insurance® is proud to offer career-building experiences through our paid summer internship program. Over the course of 10-12 weeks, interns at Farmers® have opportunities to work alongside accomplished professionals and gain hands-on experiences by developing meaningful solutions to help address real business challenges. The structured program allows interns to explore roles in their desired career paths while gaining exposure to other facets of an innovative, Fortune 500 enterprise. Internships at Farmers include regular networking opportunities within and outside of an intern’s assigned department; professional and career development sessions focused on building resumes and interview skills; informal and formal “Lunch and Learns” and “Coffee Chats” with leadership, and more. Those interested in the 2022 Farmers Insurance Internship program can visit https://www.farmers.com/careers/corporate/.

Is your internship different this year than in previous years? If so, can you please explain how?

At Farmers, we are committed to offering a robust internship experience that allows participants to explore career paths while networking and nurturing professional skill development. In an effort to prioritize the health and safety of employees and customers, Farmers transitioned to a virtual work environment for the majority of employees in March of 2020 and adapted its summer internship programs in 2020 and 2021 to occur remotely as well. (Location decisions have not yet been finalized for summer internships in 2022.) To help extend Farmers culture to interns participating remotely, Farmers created a “Networking Challenge” for interns to meet and connect with different leaders in the organization outside of their assigned team and department. The “scavenger hunt-like” exercise encourages interns to schedule conversations with different employees and departments, explore areas of the Farmers website and internal resources, and connect with the Talent Acquisition team at Farmers to help interns gain exposure to exciting career paths offered at Farmers.

Can you tell us a little bit about what sort of things interns will experience while in Adobe’s internship program?

For Adobe’s 2021 virtual internship, we are proud to be welcoming more than 1,000 interns globally. Two of our flagship intern programs, the Intern Project Expo and Intern Summit, are core to Adobe’s internship program. For the second time this year, the Intern Project Expo is a global program. Historically, the Intern Project Expo takes place in our offices around the U.S., where interns get to show off their individual summer projects to employees and leaders. They present in a science-fair-like setting, while also networking with their peers and colleagues from across the business. It’s a cumulation of all their hard work! To broaden our Intern Project Expo, we moved the program online for the first time in 2019 to include our Adobe India interns. Through a customized online portal, interns have the chance to upload their summer projects. In this online portal interns can view each other’s projects, comment on them to facilitate new conversations and opportunities, and vote on projects they thought were the most innovative. With our completely virtual internship this year, we’re now including all our interns from around the world to participate in the Intern Project Expo. This means over 1000 interns will have the chance to upload their projects into the online portal, and all 22,000+ employees getting the opportunity to view them. Additionally, our annual Intern Summit is one of our most popular intern programs. Prior to going fully virtual, it saw hundreds of interns from across the U.S. travel to our San Jose, California headquarters. Interns got to spend a day listening to inspiring keynote speakers, networking, volunteering, and attending impactful breakout sessions to help grow their careers. For our virtual Intern Summit, we’re inviting several leaders from across the business to give empowering keynotes, mailing customized swag to our interns, holding product demos, hosting online breakout sessions, and much more. It’ll be as exciting and inspiring as ever!

Last year, amidst the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Adobe made the decision to host our first-ever virtual internship program. While many companies canceled or scaled back their 2020 university programs, we welcomed more than 700 interns virtually. It was a great undertaking—equal parts challenging and exciting—and we were proud to end our 2020 internship season with an NPS score of more than 88 percent. Our university season is a time where students get to experience all the innovation that Adobe has to offer. Students get to work across our business—creating impact on a variety of our products and teams, such as Adobe XD, Adobe Spark, Adobe Research, Adobe Experience Manager, Adobe Acrobat, and more. So, as we approach the start of our intern season again, we did something we never imagined we would be doing last year—we are welcoming our largest university cohort ever to Adobe and continuing to keep our internship completely virtual for 2021. This year, we are welcoming more than 1,000 interns globally!

Can you tell us a little bit about what sort of things interns will experience while in Bell’s internship program?

Bell’s summer internship program focuses on giving students hands-on and meaningful work from day one. There are always opportunities to learn new, cross-functional skills, as well as the chance to collaborate and network with colleagues at every level of the organization. Because of our alternate work schedule, interns can take advantage of their weekends exploring their new communities with every other Friday off. Our internship program is a launching pad into Textron as a whole – transferring to a different business unit is seamless or interns can return to their original location as full-time employees.

Bell’s 2021 internship program followed our typical structure of a 10-week, in-person summer. In 2020, we made an exception and altered the timing of our program for the safety of our interns and full-time employees. Each year, we look for new ways to encourage our interns to explore fields throughout the business and support them as they take steps toward their desired career path. We have increased the number of in-house professional development training and networking opportunities with leadership and Employee Resource Groups to equip our interns with the tools needed to take on new projects and career moves.

We have an incredible relationship with the Craig Newmark School of Journalism, which has provided us the opportunity to tap the school’s talent to serve as interns for our media businesses. Our interns work in areas like editorial and social media for our portfolio of digital media brands, including Well+Good, Liverstrong.com, eHow, OnlyInYourState, Cuteness.com, and more. We see interns as a vital part of our team and provide them opportunities to see the inner workings of these media businesses and, most importantly, an opportunity to make an impact on the brands through their contributions.

Is your internship different this year than in previous years? If so, can you please explain how?

Our internship program is always evolving, but we are moving towards developing a set curriculum for our interns throughout the year. We are also leaning into having interns from learning academies and other areas that offer second career opportunities. We know firsthand how valuable our interns are to our brands and believe that empowering people from all backgrounds and stages of their lives and careers only builds deeper value for both our interns and our teams.

In our business, given the nature of what we do and, in turn, the basic but essential actions we help enable others to do—turn on the lights, refrigerate food, receive important medical care—our employees continue to play a crucial role every day—everyone is depending on reliable electricity. We will continue to help deliver it. Our priority remains the health and safety of our teams, and we have put extra precautions in place across our business to protect employees. Where possible to safely host on-site, we opted for on-site internships. Where we have no opportunity in-person, but we have plenty of quality content and available Assignment Leaders to support we have remote internships.

At Jam City, we drive an impact-focused internship program where students not only make a real-time impact on the business but even more importantly on their skillsets. Interns at Jam City work directly with our development and corporate teams on real-world assignments and projects. They partake in executive lunches, professional development workshops, and get the opportunity to network with industry professionals and a fellow intern cohort. We also offer students flexible working schedules throughout the school year and remote opportunities for non-local students. We value that great ideas come from anywhere and Jam City Interns play a big part in the success of our products.

Our 10-week summer internship program offers college juniors and seniors a real-world, hands-on experience. Each intern is paired with a mentor, and we organize team-building activities to give interns the full experience of Sunnova’s culture. Our interns are paid well and are expected to present what they’ve learned to our Executive Leadership Team.

SPS Commerce’s interns immediately become part of #TeamSPS and include high school and college students from schools near and far. Each intern is assigned a manager, a mentor and a mate. These contacts help them in their role, expose them to the many opportunities within and beyond their area at SPS, and support their time at SPS. Each intern becomes an integral part of a team at SPS, doing impactful work that makes a difference. Our summer intern program is a full-time commitment, often with the opportunity to extend their role into the school year on a part-time basis.

SPS Commerce’s interns work at our Minneapolis headquarters, at one of our regional offices, or virtually. In 2021, we returned to offering an in-person (with a virtual option) intern onboarding program in Minneapolis at the start of the summer. Many of our interns volunteer with their departments to give back to our local communities as well as have the option to participate in the company’s Business and Employee Resource Groups. These groups provide a space for employees to come together to support and help in personal or career development and to create a safe space where employees can bring their whole selves to SPS. Current groups including Black Business Resource Group, Diversity & Inclusion Group, LGBTQ+ Resource Group, and Women in Tech.
