Companies That Encourage Strong, Unique Mentorship Programs

What are the key benefits, and differentiators, of your mentorship programs?

We offer several different mentorship programs and opportunities for our employees, all with varying goals, participants, and program lengths. From informal opportunities that offer employees a chance to build global connection and share their unique skills and passions with one another to more formal programs that are supported with toolkits and prep sessions led by our internal talent development team. We also offer mentor circles that bring together small groups of employees in which they learn from one another and from senior leaders through conversations on focused conversations. We also offer targeted mentoring opportunities for leaders who are part of underrepresented communities.

The NETSCOUT Mentorship Program is an employee led and directed program that supports the strategic objectives of the company while enabling career development in a number of areas, including

  • Building leadership skills and relationships throughout the organization
  • Attracting and supporting the development of top performers
  • Encouraging the dissemination and expansion of the company’s unique Lean But Not Mean culture.

The program itself is not Management or “Top-Down” directed; it is run by a group of employee volunteers from a variety of organizations within the company. As a result, there is a feeling of ownership and “skin in the game” for those who are participating. This sense of ownership drives dedication and commitment to the program.

Because pairings of mentors and mentees is based on a match of skills desired vs skills possessed, participants are able to focus on relevant areas, not esoteric or theoretical ones, thus reinforcing the practical nature and results of the program. Additionally, because the pairings are cross-functional, participants are also able to gain knowledge of other areas within the company, and silos that get built up are overcome, increasing a sense of team and cohesion. Most people who participate in this program feel they grow their business knowledge and establish personal growth through self-advocacy.

The key benefits of our mentorship program include providing our employees with professional development skills they can utilize throughout their careers, and creating leaders from within the organization to ensure opportunities for advancement. Some of the differentiators of our mentorship program include a two-tiered participation structure, with one providing general professional development guidance for employees across the enterprise, and the other which identifies potential future leaders and partners them with mentors from senior leadership. The program features one-on-one mentorship relationships throughout a six-month duration. Mentees are selected based on leadership recommendations and a subsequent review process by the human resources team.

Cross Country’s substantial mentorship program benefits the company by facilitating the growth and development of leaders within the organization. It also helps increase employee satisfaction and retention, because our employees know they have the critical professional leadership and development support they need to achieve success. What are the key benefits, and differentiators, of your mentorship programs?

Cambium Assessment kicked off its mentorship program in January 2023 with three main goals: to provide a rewarding learning experience that supports new and growing employees, to create connections and to promote personal and professional growth.

Employees describe this program as “mentee-driven,” meaning mentees set goals, actively seek and are open to feedback, ask questions, and expand their support team(s) while reaching out to others to continue growth. The program includes a dedicated Microsoft Teams page, which provides resources for our mentor/mentee pairings (which were initiated through an interest survey and carefully matched after meetings with unit leads and our VP of Content & Test Development), a calendar of events, and monthly themes and guiding questions.

The program benefits mentees by encouraging them to be accountable and allows mentors to develop their leadership skills through mentee feedback (e.g., Did that advice/discussion help? What was the outcome/result of your conversation?).

The connections and conversations promote connectedness, provide a way to navigate career paths and career opportunities, give mentees an active role in their own growth, and work to improve employee retention.

What are the key benefits, and differentiators, of your mentorship programs?

Our Tech Skills Mentoring Program is individually tailored to meet the mentee’s goals and needs, enabling participants to concentrate on topics that are truly essential for achieving their objectives. Another advantage is the flexibility that allows mentees to learn at their own pace, with both mentors and mentees deciding when to schedule meetings and deadlines. The compassionate organizational design further enhances the program’s adaptability and maximizes its value for mentors and mentees. Lastly, the Mentor Academy and Mentor Community tools increase participants’ engagement, expand networking opportunities, and empower mentors and mentees to share their experiences, ideas, and insights with others.

How does it benefit your company to offer substantial mentorship?

Internal surveys have shown positive results among employees who participated in the Tech Skills Mentoring Program. Those who completed the program were more engaged and showed higher levels of satisfaction in a number of relevant criteria (e.g., feeling like an important member of a group; opportunity to gain new knowledge at DataArt, etc.). They were also more likely to stay with DataArt longer. Therefore, mentoring reinforces the creation of a stronger organizational culture and reduces expenses in the long run by decreasing hiring, training, and onboarding costs. Additionally, mentoring and providing opportunities to mentor others enable us to develop and upskill future managers and leaders, which contributes to succession planning, as well as creating a stronger talent pipeline for the company.
