Boomerang employees aren’t a new phenomenon in the world, but that term is a relatively new one. So much has changed in the world of working since the pandemic hit, it seems that every tenet of work life we once thought we understood now needs to be re-examined – including people who leave their jobs and then discover they’ll want to return. So here is what these four companies have to say about recruiting employees that have already worked there and departed in the past.
What is the value of rehiring ex-employees?
At Karsun, our teams are made up of collaborators, innovators, and experts who deliver what’s possible for government agencies. Returning team members are familiar with our open culture, know how to access resources, and likely have relationships with team members on other projects. This added synergy is an incredible asset and helps all of us to grow together.
What are some of the methods you’ve learned get ex-employees interested in joining your company again?
We love when former employees return to work with our team. When they are with us, we work with current team members on their professional development and growth plans. When they transition or chart a new path with a different employer, we stay connected through the same professional development organizations we supported when they were a team member. We also find many of our team stay in touch with their managers and leaders who are personally invested in their growth and development.

What is the value of rehiring ex-employees?
In today’s talent market, great people come and go from organizations all the time. They move to other companies, gain new skills and learn how to use new tools. At Elsevier, we value all our employees, past and present. We understand that people grow in different ways and they want to gain more experience so that they can continue to advance. Hence, we are encouraging our former employees to return to Elsevier, especially those who are suitable candidates. We want them to join us to work together once more in the hopes that we may once again, advance together and create more possibilities.
What are some of the methods you’ve learned get ex-employees interested in joining your company again?
– We are in the process of launching a “boomerang” alumni hiring programme, where we provide our employees with resources and content to help attract former employees back to roles at Elsevier.
– Alumni hiring is supported by an employee referral bonus programme, which means that employees may receive a bonus if an Elsevier alumnus is recruited back into the company.
– We are sharing content on our social channels, both within the company and externally, telling stories of successful boomerang hires where former employees have returned to Elsevier.

What is the value of rehiring ex-employees?
In today’s global skills shortage, ex-employees — or boomerang employees, as we like to call them — are so valuable because they’re already familiar with your organization’s culture. This minimizes onboarding, training and integration periods, allowing them to jump right in on impactful tasks (quicker than new hires that are new to your company or the industry).
What are some of the methods you’ve learned get ex-employees interested in joining your company again?
At WilsonHCG, many of our returning employees cited the ability to make an impact and influence change as one of the main reasons they decided to return. Empowering employees to put forward ideas and shape the future of your company is a great way to keep them engaged and interested in new opportunities within your organization. It allows them to progress their careers without changing employers. One of the most important tactics for attracting former employees is to update your employee value proposition (EVP) to match new and improved benefits. Those most meaningful to boomerangs include prioritizing work-life balance, offering well-being programs and providing access to mentorships and employee resource groups (ERGs) so people can build trust within the business and feel like they truly belong.
