Just as some doors close with the abandonment of in-office work in some quarters, others swing open. A remote internship can be held from anywhere, and can include candidates from everywhere. Here’s how these companies are taking advantages of the differences between the old-fashioned kind of internship and the new remote option.

The Encora Spark Internship Program offers university students across the globe hands-on experience, working on real projects and networking with talented experts in next-generation Software Engineering. The Spark Program has been designed to ensure interns have everything they need to rapidly prototype and build software with the latest technologies along four tracks: Digital Engineering, UI/UX, Quality Engineering, and Data Engineering.
The Encora Spark program is 100% remote, offering students the opportunity to become Encora-certified Digital Engineers and launch their careers within six months, all from the comfort of their homes.
Has going digital changed the nature of how internships work?
The structure of our business has always enabled remote internships. Because Encora was already coordinating remote global internships when the world went remote in 2020, we have spent the last two years expanding on that model and accelerating the growth of our Encora Spark Program around the world. Digital internships are an advantage because the remote structure allows us to work with talented individuals that we would not otherwise be able to work with due to geographic constraints. With the world being more remote than ever, interns have access to a wider range of experience with client-facing work. The remote model also enables us to offer interns 1:1 mentorship with industry-leading Software Engineers, regardless of their location.

Gainwell Technologies’ 12-week Summer Internship Program allows participants to engage in real-world experiences and take part in hands-on relevant work in a corporate environment. Participants of this program receive the opportunity to learn about our business and interact with team members and experts of all levels through remote training sessions. Interns attend weekly “Meet the Leader” virtual forums, where they interact with executives across the various organizations at Gainwell to learn more about the business and culture. They also participate in a cross-functional project in which they collaborate with other interns and present the final product to the executive leadership team. This year we have 63 students from 32 universities across the country participating.
Has going digital changed the nature of how internships work?
Digital internships make finding purposeful and engaging one-on-one interactions difficult, and we believe that the most critical piece of a successful internship program is the mentorship component. Gainwell’s Summer Internship Program trains the mentors participating specifically in leading virtual teams and provides them with the curriculum and resources to execute a meaningful experience. Our mentors offer our interns professional coaching, while the curriculum encompasses soft skills training, resume reviews, best practices for working from home, team-building exercises, networking opportunities with peers and other employees in the company and much more. Ultimately, the mentorship provided to Gainwell’s interns helps foster individual growth and defines additional development opportunities relevant for participants to plan the next steps of their careers.

InternX is our annual paid summer internship program that diverse and underrepresented candidates from around the country to join our teams – providing job experience with a leading tech company and growing industry. With our internship program being remote, we’re able to hire more interns in any location, and give them the opportunity to learn what it would be like to work remotely in a full-time role for a company. They go through the same remote onboarding and orientation our full-time employees do, and seamlessly integrate into our teams. We’ve also hired some of our interns into full-time roles!
Has going digital changed the nature of how internships work?
We’ve held our InternX program both in-person in our Denver headquarters and, starting in 2020, remotely. Having our internship program operate remotely has allowed us to open the candidate pool and hire excellent talent from across the country, further diversifying the program. It also gives the interns a unique look into what it would be like to work for a 100% remote or hybrid environment when they graduate. This helps them learn the ins and outs of Zoom, Teams, and other remote software, and how to work within your team and across organizations in the company remotely.
