Companies with the Best Benefits for Remote Workers

So you’ve got a fully remote team now, and everyone has adjusted the best they can to the idea that things have changed for now in terms of the way we all work. That New Normal has crept in and settled down before we realized it. It may not be forever, but it’s definitely where we are here at the end of 2021.

So here’s a good question: What do you offer remote employees in terms of benefits? Instead of snacks and on-site amenities, how do you add the right mix of benefits that remote workers will find practical and attractive? Here are a handful of companies that have thought that through for us:

We know from team member feedback that having access to benefits that support their mental health is more important than ever in a remote environment. As a global organization, we offer benefits and wellbeing that can vary by region based on statutory regulations and local practice. For our US Cimpress and Vista team members as well as some of our European locations, we have partnered with Headspace to make it easy for team members to look after their mental wellbeing from the mobile app whenever and wherever they are. We work with a remote ergonomic assessment provider, Rising Workplace to provide quarterly webinars and one on one remote ergonomic consultations for team members on their workspace. Team members at various locations globally were granted a “Wellbeing Day” in May and “Recharge Fridays” to rest and refresh through June, July and August. We’ve recently partnered with Peloton in the US to provide team members free access to their online platform of fitness content and preferred pricing on Peloton equipment.

Our approach has always been to offer similar benefits and wellbeing programs to as many team members as possible, regardless of remote status. Though specific benefits and programs vary by region, our offering to team members always aligns with our global strategy to support team members’ work-life harmony with resources encompassing physical, mental, emotional and financial wellbeing. In the US, where most team members have shifted from being office-based to remote-first since 2020, we’ve evolved our health and wellbeing program to better suit their new way of working and living. Examples of this include removing copays on telehealth visits under the medical plan, and offering free access to Headspace and Peloton to give team members access to premier wellbeing partners without leaving their home.

We understand that remote workers are looking for ways to maintain work-life balance while still staying connected to their fellow teammates. With flexible scheduling and time off policies, employees can better separate their work lives and home lives. When working remotely, it’s often hard for employees to feel a connection to company culture and their colleagues. Our remote workers want benefits that connect them to Ocrolus and the people they work with everyday. This includes virtual events, fireside chats with leaders, and weekly challenges where employees are invited to submit and vote on answers, providing a fun activity to interact with colleagues. We also offer generous stipends for professional development. In many cases, remote workers are looking for the same opportunities and benefits afforded to office employees. They want to feel connected to their teams, engaged at work, and that there are opportunities for career growth and progression. Unfortunately, many organizations often overlook remote workers for growth opportunities. In fact, according to our 2020 Remote Work Report (www.hubspot.com/hubfs/Remote-Work-Report-2020.pdf), 42% of survey takers had not been promoted since becoming remote full-time. Understanding this, career and professional development is an area we’ve focused on this year to make sure our remote employees feel that there are paths outlined for them, and they are supported in their growth. At HubSpot, we offer a variety of mentorship and coaching programs, including ThinkSpaces (sessions for managers to discuss challenging management topics), LEADHer virtual programming for our female Director+ community, UnStuck for all employees to get mentorship, RISE, a mentorship program for employees of color, and more. We’re committed to building innovative ways for our employees to virtually connect, learn, and grow their careers. Additionally, we have a significant number of senior leaders who are fully remote and we actively work to make our performance reviews and promotion criteria inclusive, regardless of location.

Like so many companies, RingCentral went fully remote as response to the Covid pandemic. And we immediately noticed two important things: 1) our people were even MORE productive than they had been when they came into an office regularly; and 2) we needed to roll out new programs to help people stay healthy, happy and productive while they worked remotely. So we added Headspace to help people stay calm, focused and productive. TaskHuman is a new program available to US employees that offers 1:1 coaching in 1,000+ lifestyle areas, like exercise, cooking, yoga and mindfulness. Perkspot is an individualized discounts and rewards program and we now offer pet insurance to protect the furry members of the RingCentral family. There are more programs, but these are some of the most impactful ways we are supporting our people working remotely.

The main thing that we heard from our people working remotely was “give me the tools and support I need to balance work and life.” It can be hard to know when to stop and say “I’ve done enough work today, it’s time to spend some time on the rest of my life.” From meditation and 1:1 coaching programs to recognizing that people are spending more time with their pets, and offering them pet insurance, we are focussing on programs that will support people no matter where they are working.
