For today’s Culture Showdown, it’s two staples of brick-and-mortar retail: Nordstrom and Macy’s. What is the company culture like at Macy’s? How is the pay at Nordstrom? Let’s take a look at Comparably’s data to get a peek behind the curtain of both chains to see how workers on the inside feel about their jobs and how they are treated.
OVERALL CULTURE

One Nordstrom employee says the company culture is “like a family with our ups and downs but always giving our best.” Another praises “great teamwork and follow-through.”
Macy’s culture gets a similar review from one worker: “From day one, I have been treated like a family member to the team.”
CEO

A Nordstrom employee says “I cannot say enough good things about Blake, Erik, and the whole Nordstrom family.” Another says, “We don’t hear much from them except with major announcements.”
Of Macy’s leadership, one employee writes, “they need to get better at working as a team instead of individuals.” Another writes that “communication is lacking between the executives, managers, and other staff.”
COMPENSATION

About their compensation, one Nordstrom employee writes, “it’s def fair and competitive.” Another calls pay “really good commission-based with salary.”
Of Macy’s pay, a worker writes, “not fair pay based on amount of work.” Another says, “They pay as little as they can, a raise is literally 25 cents.”
PERKS AND BENEFITS

Nordstrom’s benefits package includes “stock options, health, dental, vision, 401K, charitable match.”
A Macy’s employee is thankful for their “401k and retirement pension.”
GENDER
One female Nordstrom employee writes of her department, “There are three of us and some departments are diverse and some not so much. Depends on the head department manager.”
About Macy’s, one worker writes, “It’s mostly women.” Another hopes the leadership team will “stop their patriarchal attitude.”
DIVERSITY

“There is a good mix of men and women along with people from different ethnicities,” writes one Nordstrom worker.
