Seven Companies Changing Healthcare with Technology

North American healthcare systems were rocked and tested to their core by the 2020 COVID-19 outbreak, with the stresses and fractures in the existing system all the more obvious with the major strain put on it at every brace point. We’re always thrilled when by the disruption of existing practices by new tech that can make life better and easier, but nowhere is this more necessary than in healthcare, where older, less helpful practices left in place “because that’s the way it’s always been” can end up hurting people and ending lives.

These seven companies are working to forge better healthcare practices of the future, using ever-evolving technology to ensure enhanced efficiency, more effective treatments, reduced costs, and faster diagnoses.

How can Sensyne Health’s tech improve or advance healthcare?

Our two divisions – Life Sciences and Healthcare – work together to connect patients, clinicians, and researchers, which collectively help healthcare professionals deliver better patient care while curating vital data to support the next generation of medical research. More specifically:

Life Sciences Division – Connects the life sciences industry with healthcare providers. The Sensyne Life Sciences team combines clinical and data science expertise to develop machine learning technologies applied to ethically sourced anonymized electronic patient record (EPR) data received from our partnerships with health systems, and clinical trial data from Sensyne’s partnership with Phesi Inc. To further develop Sensyne’s life sciences capability, we are building SENSIGHT™ a world-class pharmaceutical research and development platform to accelerate the speed of data processing, analysis, and insight discovery. Our unique approach creates a docking station between healthcare providers and the pharmaceutical industry, creating scientific value and providing a financial return to the healthcare providers.

Healthcare Division – Connects healthcare professionals with patients.
We develop digital health products which support healthcare professionals with clinical and operational decision-making to improve and personalize patient care. Healthcare products span a variety of applications including decision-making support, remote patient monitoring, diagnostics, prescribed digital therapeutics, and the recording and presentation of healthcare data in a clinical setting. These digital products can generate large databases of phenotypic data enabling discovery research and improved patient care, contact, communications, and outcomes.

Why is it important for technology to allow disruption of old healthcare processes?

The pandemic highlighted the strong need to “update” existing healthcare processes and demonstrated how technology has the potential to make a positive impact on healthcare systems, patient care, and patient outcomes. During this time, the rise of technologies like remote patient monitoring (RPM) during this time, empowered us to take control of our own health. It played a critical role in helping us curb COVID infections by allowing healthcare resources to focus on patients most in need, ultimately easing pressure on healthcare systems. Demand for healthcare will continue to grow and the uptake in RPM such as apps, consultations over video calls, etc. is expected to increase further. Looking beyond the crisis caused by the pandemic over the last year, it’s important that we not only recognize the great potential of technology for the future of healthcare but also embrace it where possible.

Clinical trials are effectively meant to answer scientific questions and provide ways to prevent, diagnose and treat a disease. However, in 2021, we still don’t fully understand the underlying biology of the diseases we’re trying to treat. True treatment comes from being able to predict and prevent a disease in the first place. Utilizing the power of Clinical AI and Machine Learning technologies to collect and analyze real-world anonymized patient data can be a true gamechanger. It has the potential to generate valuable insights that can catalyze research, lead to improved patient care, power the development of new treatments and provide a better understanding of how some patients will respond to a treatment or predict who may develop a disease at some point throughout their life.

Embracing and implementing technology into existing healthcare pathways and scientific research will not only support the delivery of improved patient care but will also help us move from a current reactive model of care to a proactively preventative model.

How can your GoodRx’s tech improve or advance healthcare?

GoodRx uses tech to make healthcare more affordable and convenient for consumers. Our proprietary technology processes over 200 billion data points every day and delivers transparent and lower prices for brand and generic medications directly to consumers. To date, we have saved Americans over $25 billion on their prescription drug costs.

Why is it important for technology to allow disruption of old healthcare processes?

The U.S. healthcare system is incredibly antiquated and by and large, has remained stagnant. Only tech-driven direct-to-consumer healthcare solutions will finally be able to accomplish what no single leader – from insurers, to hospitals, to PBMs, to policymakers, and beyond – has yet been able to achieve. For example, the ability to see doctors from the comfort of our homes, use Bluetooth-enabled healthcare monitoring tools to track our daily metrics, have prescriptions delivered directly to our front door, search for more affordable options for care like we do for travel, and so much more.

How can Conduent’s tech improve or advance healthcare?

Conduent’s healthcare technology solutions contribute to nearly every aspect of community and personal wellness. Conduent serves nearly 40 percent of the nation’s hospitals with its Midas care analytics platform giving them the unified data (cost, quality, access, clinician performance, and community health) they need to achieve the Quadruple Aim. Organizations and non-profits working in concert to solve intractable social and health inequities rely on Conduent Healthy Communities Institute for socio-economic and population health data to identify and address social determinants of health, one neighborhood at a time. And Conduent empowers public health agencies around the world to fight disease, trauma, addiction, and environmental hazards with its Maven technology.

Why is it important for technology to allow disruption of old healthcare processes?

Technology has the potential to transform the US health system from one that delivers sick care to one that delivers well care and gives us the power to address inequities and disparities (in fact, Conduent technology has helped providers save $48 million with reduced hospital readmissions). We’ve seen firsthand how in a patient/consumer-centric healthcare ecosystem, technology plays a pivotal role in enabling collaboration and transparency while breaking down the long-standing silos between providers, payers, pharma, and many more in the care continuum. Important advancements in data science and predictive analytics have made consumers more conscious of their health and given providers the means to deliver the best interventions for the right patient at the right time.

How can EQRx’s tech improve or advance healthcare?

While technological and computational advances have transformed drug discovery over the past several decades, clinical research and development remain siloed and wedded to expensive, slow, and manual methods. The COVID pandemic has forced established companies to change rapidly, but far too often, data remains siloed, and digital tools are used individually. By building a life sciences company with a digital-native, data-integrated infrastructure, EQRx is tackling these problems at every level and leveraging operational improvements to remake medicine.

Why is it important for technology to allow disruption of old healthcare processes?

Without an improved technological stack, clinical development will continue to lag behind rapidly changing laboratory science. This hinders the collective ability to rapidly develop life-saving medicines, to sell them at affordable prices, and to understand where and how they are efficacious. We are in a biotechnological revolution, as exemplified by nearly miraculous mRNA vaccines; we need to be able to rapidly get these advances to the people who need them and ensure access to achieve the true potential.

How can Kyruss’ tech improve or advance healthcare?

Kyruus is the leader in provider search and scheduling for healthcare organizations, dedicated to a vision to make healthcare work better for everyone by connecting people to the care they need. Physician-founded and led, we saw that a systemic misalignment of supply and demand was causing people to wait too long for care and too often end up with the wrong providers. Inspired by baseball’s Moneyball concept, Kyruus delivers a better, data-driven approach to patient-provider matching and scheduling. Today, and with our recent acquisition of HealthSparq, our combined entity serves 70 health systems and 100 health plan brands across the US, powering people to make better healthcare decisions.

Why is it important for technology to allow disruption of old healthcare processes?

The creation of a platform bridging health systems and health plans comes at a time when digital is emerging as the preferred channel for people seeking care. Research shows that health system and health plan websites are among the top three sources people use to find providers online – and more than 40% of healthcare consumers want to book online once they’ve found a provider aligned with their needs. By combining, Kyruus and HealthSparq are removing the complexity of care navigation, by enabling unprecedented connectivity between these traditionally disparate access channels and the provider data sources that power them.
