Executive Bio

Dr. Steven Shak, also known as Steve, M.D. co-founded Genomic Health Inc. and has been its Chief Scientific Officer since December 31, 2014. Dr. Shak served as Executive Vice President of Research and Development at Genomic Health Inc, from July 26, 2012 to December 31, 2014. Dr. Shak served as Chief Medical Officer of Genomic Health Inc. from December 2000 to 2013. He has been a leader in personalized medicine for more than two decades. He has spearheaded the discovery and development of several breakthrough products in the biotechnology industry. Under Dr. Shak' leadership Genomic Health used innovative molecular diagnostic methods and rigorous clinical studies to develop the Oncotype DX??? breast cancer and colon cancer assays and has maintained an 80% product development success rate. Prior to Genomic Health, he served for 14 years in various roles in Discovery Research and Medical Affairs at Genentech, Inc. He served as Senior Director and Staff Clinical Scientist of Genentech. He led the clinical team that gained approval for Herceptin???, a targeted biologic treatment for breast cancer. He discovered Pulmozyme???, a mucus-dissolving enzyme that is approved worldwide for the treatment of the genetic disease, Cystic Fibrosis. Dr. Shak initiated the cancer clinical trials of the novel anti-angiogenesis agent, anti-VEGF. In addition, he led the clinical team that gained approval for Herceptin???, a pharmacogenomic treatment for metastatic breast cancer. He has forged strong relationships with patient advocacy organizations. Prior to Genentech, he served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at the New York University School of Medicine. He serves on the Board of Directors of The Children's Cause. Dr. Shak holds a BA in Chemistry from Amherst College and an MD from the New York University School of Medicine and completed his Post-Doctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco.
