Richard Smith — SVP of Operations at Portal Instruments

Rick brings 20 years of experience to Portal in the areas of medical device quality assurance and regulatory affairs. Prior to joining Portal, he served as Sr. Director of Quality & Regulatory Affairs at BionX Medical Technologies Inc. At BionX, he helped overhaul and lean out the quality system in support of a successful redesign and launch of a powered bionic prosthetic ankle. The product success led to subsequent acquisition of the company by one of the world’s leading prosthetics companies, Ottobock, after which Rick played a key role in transitioning manufacturing and quality system responsibilities to a consolidated corporate manufacturing site. Rick also held Quality leadership positions at ConforMIS Inc, Hologic and Analogic where he contributed to various medical devices including: CT scanners, IVD imaging systems, GYN surgical devices and patient-specific knee implant systems. Prior to his corporate career, Rick served as a nuclear submarine officer in the US Navy.
