Carter G. Phillips — Managing Partner of Washington D C at Sidley Austin LLP

Mr. Carter G. Phillips serves as the Managing Partner of the Washington, D.C. Office at Sidley Austin LLP. Mr. Phillips served as a law clerk to both Judge Robert Sprecher on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and Chief Justice Warren E. Burger on the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Phillips served as an Assistant to the Solicitor General for three years, during which time he argued nine cases on behalf of the federal government in the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Phillips has argued 56 cases in the Supreme Court, for a career total of 65 appearances and has argued more than 70 cases in other appellate courts. Mr. Phillips argued six cases in this Term of the Supreme Court and eleven cases in the last two Terms. He serves as a Member of the Supervisory Board at Super lawyers. Mr. Phillips is a Member of the American Law Institute, the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers and a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. His practice is devoted almost exclusively to appellate matters. In September 2007, Mr. Phillips received the Lewis F. Powell Award for Business Advocacy from the National Chamber Litigation Center, the public policy law firm of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In 2008, the Legal Times named him one of the 90 Greatest Washington Lawyers of the Last 30 Years. In March 2010, he was named one of The Decade's Most Influential Lawyers in Appellate Law by the National Law Journal. He completed JD from Northwestern University in 1977, MA from Northwestern University in 1975 and BA from Ohio State University in 1973.
