Mr. Jeffrey S. Rothstein is a Partner at Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP. He joined the firm in 1982 and became a partner in 1989. His practice covers the wide range of issues facing startup and emerging growth companies and the issues facing established companies moving onto the Internet, with particular emphasis on intellectual property and e-commerce transactions, strategic alliances and the laws governing e-commerce. Mr. Rothstein regularly represents companies entering into software license and development agreements, application service agreements and strategic alliance agreements, often with related equity investments. He advises established companies on their e-business initiatives, including joint ventures and the creation of contracts over the Internet or by email, and startup companies on organizational, corporate governance and capital raising issues. Mr. Rothstein's career at the Firm has also included extensive experience with banking and financial transactions, including leveraged buyouts, syndicated credit transactions and workouts. Mr. Rothstein recently advised Iridium Satellite LLC on its technology license from Motorola and assisted several leading Wall Street investment banks on e-commerce initiatives. He also advises Global Healthcare Exchange, LLC on its strategic alliances. From 1996 to 1999, Mr. Rothstein coordinated the complete redesign and replacement of the Firm's worldwide computer network. During this time the Firm replaced its servers, hubs, switches and desktop computers, installed a fiber optic network backbone, migrated its servers and desktops to new operating systems, replaced its email system, and introduced Internet access, notebook computers, remote access, secure e-mail and a second-generation desktop fax system. He now uses this systems experience to better understand the technology his client's license, use and produce and to better advise them on the legal and practical issues they face. Mr. Rothstein is a member of the American Bar Association and the Chicago Bar Association, and is a Trustee of The Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum in Chicago. He lectures annually at Northwestern University on e-commerce, commercial and bankruptcy law. He did JD from University of Chicago in 1982 and AB from Harvard University in 1978.
