It very much depends on your department and Manager, which isn't unique from the other large company I've worked for (UPS, AB). I work in IT, I am highly motivated, and I consistently get very good annual reviews. However, I've consistently gotten 3-4% raises for the past 7 years with no promotions. Your upward mobility is a function of your Department and Management. If your department doesn't typically have much movement (promotions, retirements, etc.) you will find yourself stuck in your position. Likewise, if your Manager/Management Team isn't an advocate for you, then you'll find yourself stuck.

It really depends on what type of IT your referring to, and the Management team. At AB, you may find totally different experiences depending on the team. IT Support is very demanding and I'd say the least appreciated.
