Q&A With Medtronic Employees

A career at Medtronic is like no other. We’re purposeful. We’re committed. And we’re driven by our Mission to alleviate pain, restore health and extend life for millions of people worldwide.

How employees describe working at Medtronic

No longer feels like the mission-driven company it was under Omar.

Too focused on managing short term quarterly optics rather than the long-term health and growth of the company. The repeated end of quarter spending freezes feel reactive and financially engineered, creating disruption, delaying growth driving programs, and undermining confidence in exec leadership

I no longer like working there

Simple effective and positive results

Awesome place to work and add value

That is a personal choice and must be prioritized by the individual.

  • Depends on the job and level and department. Lots of flex in where and when you work, but lots of work. Most people in the Minneapolis campuses come in bw-7-9 and leave bw 4-6 but majority of the people i know work decently more than 40h a week, however i see some people that walk out without their laptops. in general it's not a huge "we're all out for lunch" or team happy hours place- people scoot for family/personal reasons every day.

  • Very dificult

Truly bad, day by day getting worst

  • Depends on the type of role/function, the level and the business unit you are in. There is generally good flexibility for salaried employees to leave for kid appointments, etc.. Generally, the higher up you go in management, the more you are paid but the higher the workload expected. I am a Director and on average I work 10-12h days, though not all of that is in the office. I am allowed unlimited vacation technically, though I don't typically use more than 4 wks a year, but I feel like I am in control of when and where I work. I have employees that work remotely from the cabins occasionally. Medtronic also has Summer Fridays for non-customer facing employees where you get 1/2 days off in Summer months if you put in your hours in-advance of Friday.

  • Very reasonable. The company encourages PTO to add flexibility to home and health .

  • Excellent

  • Pretty great actually- most people get 4wks and there's a shutdown week bw Christmas and NY where nearly everyone is offline (read: no email quicksand to Recover from!). Very flexible schedules the rest of the year for those in salaried roles typically. You work hard but you can get your kids off the bus/drop off in the am, etc. summers have "summer fridays" where you work 40h before mid-day Fri and you get PM off. (Not sure if US only.)

  • Usually very accommodating.

Slow due to recruiter workloads- probably about 6-12 wks. Typically application, wait several weeks, phone screen with recruiter, phone screen with hiring manager, onsite interview with several people, offer extension, 2-3wk notice period.

  • Standards are quite high and solid backgrounds performed. Highly recommend an internship if still in school and then apply for full time position.

  • It can take many rounds with many individuals.

  • for med tech one of the most diverse. there are strategies to improve representation for US ethnicities and women. but one tangent example is the diversity of the food in the cafeteria- theres a permanent station for indian/mid-eastern food, and a permanent station for asian foods. some departments are far better represented than others. leadership is improving but has some work to do. fairly open-minded culturally though. there are also employee resource groups/affinity groups that are quite active and well sponsored by executives.

  • High diversity

Depends on the role, but most will allow for flexibility in schedule for being away for family events, etc, but expect you are working/accessible core hours (~9-4). Same for WFH. I typically WFH 1d/wk.

  • It's flexible to a degree, they are open to working remotely a few times a month.

  • Yes but the process can be incredibly slow. There is a practically unlimited variety of opportunities to advance but you have to be proactive in seeling them out- HR does almost nothing with development and a lot of managers are too busy or don't know how to help you. The employee resource groups are amazing though and they offer a lot of programs in professional development and provide good networking.

  • Yes but it is very slow
