The benefit of a flexible work plan is that you can do so much with it. It’s fair to say that imaginations across the nation and across the world are only just getting fired up when it comes to the possibilities of a work model that doesn’t depend on synchronous work in the office. Here’s how three companies are doing it.
How have you worked out your flex schedule plan?
Some people thrive in an office, energized by the bustle, collaboration, and connection. Others work better in a workspace at home, with quiet to help focus and more efficient workflows. Some people need a bit of both. At Momentive, we get to choose—working in-person, fully remote, or a hybrid model that combines the two. Everyone makes their first elections when they’re hired, and they have a chance to revisit it again every year. It’s a great path forward that puts employees in the driver’s seat of how they best operate.
What are the benefits to your company of flex work?
As a company dedicated to collecting feedback and amplifying voices, we’ve realized that employees are never going to fit into one box, and that instead of trying to guess what they need, we’re better off asking. Our “choice model” is the result of careful research, and we think it’s better for both our employees and the workforce overall.

Axon adopted a remote-first workplace for all offices across the globe. What started as temporary flexibility during COVID has become an important part of who we are. We want to enable a thriving work environment no matter where our employees (or potential employees) are located. This can look different for each employee and team, whether that be a later start or extended lunch to enable school drop off/pick up or ‘quiet weeks’ when we encourage our teams to take time for themselves. At Axon, we also consider “nontraditional” meetings and networking events part of our flexible work plans. During COVID, Axon President Luke Larson encouraged employees to get up and move for an hour and a half during their workday. Some did yoga, others took walks with their pets. This is something we still encourage.
What are the benefits to your company of flex work?
We believe our people create our fun and innovative workplace culture. Axon strives to make employees feel supported and happy so that we can continue building world-class public safety solutions. To do this, Axon offers robust health and wellness benefits, including mental health, pre-tax retirement, and health savings opportunities, annual bonuses, stock compensation awards, unlimited PTO, and career development opportunities. We’ve found this helps our team work at its best. Our Comparably employee surveys found:
* 100% of employees look forward to interacting with their coworkers when they come to work.
* 99% of employees are proud to be a part of their company.
* 97% of employees feel their manager cares about them as a person.
* 97% of employees feel invested in the company’s goals.
* 81% of employees are satisfied with their work/life balance.
Axon sees a direct correlation with these metrics, employee retention, and increased hiring.

At Lily AI, all employees have the opportunity to speak with their managers regarding work schedules. Our employees know that they are held accountable to provide all their work in a timely manner. Another great thing about Lily AI, our employees also update their calendars to match their working schedules.
What are the benefits to your company of flex work?
Flex work allows our employees to work remotely while traveling. It creates a better work-life balance, so more time can be spent with family and friends. Employees can schedule personal appointments when needed because they know they can start work early in the day, or work later in the day if needed. Lily AI feels that freedom and flexibility allow our employees to be more focused during their working schedules. The big plus is no commuting time to the office, which equals less stress.
