    Top Employee Response

Less then 3 years, but every 3 years is a bad trend as well. A career with non-consecutive 3 year engagements, along with some 5 plus engagements is acceptable. Most of the time in IT changing jobs is the only way to receive competitive compensation.

Its too often if you're voluntarily switching companies less than every 2 years, and increase that range by a 1/2 year to year with each concurrent switch. As a manager involved with hiring its always a red flag for me when I see someone with only 5-10 years experience being at 5+ different companies over that time frame (unless they're doing contract projects).

**Consulting roles do not apply to this answer** Habitually staying at places for less than a year is concerning. In tech jobs, there is a known on-boarding 'ramp' to get fully productive. By staying less than a year, you're barely up to speed. That tells me that you either don't know what you're doing and are leaving before you get fired or that you don't have enough patience/grit to see a project through. 2 years is a good length of time to stay.

I am retired so, from what I understand, today job hopping is not as bad as it use to be. Therefore, as long as the tech professional stays within his/her certification requirement makes them valuable. So, every two years is OK. That is just my opinion only.

Depending on the role really, but yearly hops are a red flag to me.

More than once every two years.

If the role is not right, move. However don’t do it too often. A person who has had multiple shorter jobs (less than 2 years) probably have issues fitting in/ not a team player.

The only problem with job hopping is on the technician. Because your skills are highly sought after, be prepared to follow your instinct and go with the head hunter with the most rewarding position based on your own definition. Do not feel obligated to one company if another offers you the option to be more comfortable with your work life. The company has to hire the most qualified person and you must choose the most appropriate company to work for. It is a two way street, do not think you are in a "DIFFERENT" position - they do not exist - best man gets the dough.

Often enough. It is a very competitive industry and high on demand especially for millennials.
