When you become so cynical that you even can't stand your thoughts/actions about your job. If you can't physically do the job/work. Do you have other obligations that make your job more of a nuisance? Then maybe you should step down. No one can afford to retire because inflation has hit every aspect of existence except employee wages. YES - everyone should have the option to retire when they feel they want to. 20 years at a job should be enough.
When you are the right age it's time to retire to let new staff take your position. Yes, you should retire so you can spend more time with family. There have never been a person saying "I wish I worked more".
When you find it hard to keep up with your peers
When you just can't stand the people you work with anymore and it makes you want to commit suicide, because you hate having to deal with them.
It is a personal decision on whether or not to retire. You know it's time when you have enough saved to live and you no longer want to work.
When one cannot tolerate politics and incompetence anymore.
