I've always received better offers from other companies before it was time to ask for a raise. When asking the current company to match the offer, they claimed they can't go as high. I always ended up taking the offer.
Come prepared w/ 1) Your recent performance and how you have impacted the company 2) Industry information about how much that position gets paid at other companies
Be prepared to quit if you don't get it. Otherwise it's clear to your employer who's got the leverage.
Tie your raise request to goals for the company ... How can you help the company hit meaningful metrics and be rewarded by doing so ... Also ask yourself are you crtical to the organization
Research your market worth, think about the value you bring to the company (e.g., are you super creative, have excellent relationship with clients, have a lot of internal knowledge..) and confidently express you deserve more.
