Advancement at ADP is based on who you know and who likes you, nothing more and nothing less. Doing your job well means very little. Being a good order taker, shaking the right hand and smiling in the right person's face, goes much further. Expect to be thwarted at every turn or even let go if you are not liked by the right people above you, even if you're at the top of your field and a high performer. There are "reduction in force" (RIF) events yearly where roles are "eliminated" due to "budget constraints." During these RIF times, good people who have not done the "right" things for the "right" people or made the "right" connections are suddenly gone, without their performance or contributions ever coming into play. So, learn to be a politician before you apply.
As you can imagine with any large firm the answer is it varies. Brand perception is BIG. What you are known for in the company likely counts for more then you actually do. Its a heavy top down matrix org. If the Sr leaders know you and have formed a positive opinion then you will get promoted. The Focal Point review and pay for performance programs are 'fake doors' and even if you do well on a review it rarely if ever comes into play when there is a promotion. Promotions are based on 360 reviews and perception and not on your achievements against your goals.
Sometimes based on favoritism and not job qualifications or experience
