
Well, as time passes, you are given some more responsibility. I was a TL on my last project. I might have not performed that well (my whole team was new to the programming language the client wanted us to develop in); We delivered a couple of weeks late... I'm looking forward, anyway, for a new chance to become a TL. Also, depending on your peers/superiors evaluation, you can be recommended to upgrade your seniority. You begin as a junior, then semi-senior, then senior, then software designer (my current position), then architect, and I think there is still a level above architect...
of my point of view, they are very good to motivate the globers to work to get a promotion
