How's the work life balance at Northwestern Mutual?
Work hard, the harder you work the more you get out of the internship. Certainly you can take a backseat whenever you want. But it feels better to crush it when your in the internship
It can vary. I work on the admin side, the work life balance depends on who you work with. It varies.
I have not worked a friday since i turned fifty and took 20 weeks of vacation last year. It could not be better
If you could make changes, how would you improve the culture at Northwestern Mutual?
I would create more training programs for the admin folks. There is none currently and the learning curve is huge.
Too stuck in process. We need to strive for more innovation.
What part of Northwestern Mutual's business is growing fastest? What part is having difficulties?
The investment business is growing fastest. The technology and client experience needs a ton of improvement but I know they are working on it. Many things need to be streamlined.
Investments at our agency have been growing 20% annually for 25 years. Group health has done very little in terms of growth
What do people at Northwestern Mutual think about the CEO? What do they do well and what can they improve?
I think they are pretty positive overall.
John Shlifske is a tremendous CEO. We are very lucky to have him
What are you most excited about working at Northwestern Mutual?
I love the job security. My position is hard to fill and I know no matter what happens or where I move, I will be able to find work. That's pretty rare these days.

NM has rested on its laurels of job security for too long as a reason for underpaying, if they want top talent, it will cost them.

The internship really teaches you everything about the financial industry and more. You learn a lot about how to run a buisness and be a professional. The unique thing about this internship is that your not just doing grunt work, you go out there and are on the same playing field as people 20 years in the company. If your willing to put in the work, you have all the tools that can help you grow a financial practice that most people would only dream of.

Just depends on who you work with. I have found it to be very fare and lenient.

Depends on the group. Can be a young and fun group or a more mature group. Because of the constant client contact, it will be professional and a bit formal.

They vary greatly. I have worked in several different offices and see a wide range of office cultures. For the most part, very professional.

It completely varies. I find it to be pretty standard most of the time although some take way too long to make a decision on hiring.

Some leadership is forward thinking, others set in old ways, disjoint leadership is disheartening. Engineering culture is under siege.
What makes you most happy at Northwestern Mutual?
New things and the fact that we're starting to get more autonomy. If leadership would listen to engineering more, it would be amazing!

Team level things are pretty chill, but leadership can seem to push engineering too fast or be dissatisfied with pace of delivery.
