A leader in fast-casual dining, Chipotle has been committed to serving Food with Integrity and revolutionizing the fast food industry since its inception. In 2021, Chipotle set science-based targets with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to reduce absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% by 2030 from a 2019 base year. To achieve these targets, Chipotle identified the four most carbon-intensive functions of its business to reduce emissions: restaurants, transportation and warehousing, food supply chain, and waste and packaging. Chipotle also created the Real Foodprint feature on the Chipotle app and Chipotle.com to show guests the cumulative potential impact of all their Chipotle orders compared to orders using conventional to further its transparency efforts. Developed in partnership with HowGood, Real Foodprint compares average values for each of its real ingredients to their conventional counterparts against five key metrics: Less Carbon in the Atmosphere, Gallons of Water Saver, Improved Soil Health, Organic Land Supported, and Antibiotics Avoided. Chipotle publishes will publish a Sustainability Report update in April to showcase progress on the company’s commitments across Food & Animals, People, and the Environment.

In November 2021, RX signed, as a founding member, the pledge for Net Zero Carbon Events, organized by UFI – our global events trade association. The pledge was presented at the Global Climate Summit (COP26) in Glasgow, with more than 100 signatories at the time of launch, making it the most global and inclusive collaborative action tackling the challenges of climate change within the events sector. By signing the pledge, we are committed to publishing before the end of 2023 our pathway to achieving net-zero by 2050 at the latest, with an interim target of reducing global GHG emissions by 50% by 2030. We will collaborate with partners, suppliers, and customers to drive change across the value chain, and to track the progress towards the targets. Finally, we are committed to reporting on our progress globally with UFI at least every two years. To support our commitments in January 2022 we appointed our first Global Sustainability Director to develop a roadmap on what becoming Net Zero means to us at RX and for all of our event brands. Our Global Sustainability Director will work closely with our event and operations leaders, and external partners such as the other companies who have signed the pledge, to identify and help create specific best practices for our own offices, the sectors we serve, and our show production.

GoodLeap is the leading finance technology company in the U.S. for sustainable home solutions. Through our proprietary software and deep domain expertise, we connect financial institutions, tens of thousands of contractors, and hundreds of thousands of consumers. As a result, we are helping catalyze a massive shift to renewable energy and sustainable products.

Why is it important for companies like yours to be all in on battling climate change?

One of the biggest reasons sustainable solutions have not been adopted quicker in the U.S. is homeowners struggle to purchase and finance these products. Before GoodLeap, a homeowner interacted with multiple contractors, drawing up contracts on carbon paper and financing on a credit card. With GoodLeap today, a homeowner can work with a single contractor on a tablet to create a seamless, transparent purchase of multiple products, all while providing access to a range of financial institutions.

Since 2020, Elsevier has been net zero for its own direct emissions (Scope 1 and 2) and business travel (part of Scope 3). Last year by joining The Climate Pledge alongside RELX, Elsevier made itself accountable to achieve net-zero carbon across all its emissions by no later than 2040, 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. This pledge further reinforces Elsevier’s longstanding efforts, through its parent company RELX, to address the global climate emergency through our science-based targets. Between 2010-2020 we exceeded our goal to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 location-based carbon emissions by 40% with a 64% decrease and surpassing a goal to cut energy and fuels by 30% with a 52% reduction. We reached our goal of purchasing renewable electricity equivalent to 100% of our global electricity consumption from renewable energy and renewable energy certificates and attained ISO 14001 certification for 55% of our business. Last year, Elsevier launched our Climate Action program, with an internal governance system and established an external board of distinguished research professionals. The Climate Action program aims to address our own carbon footprint and to take steps to reduce indirect emissions in our value chain, advocating for action within the communities we serve. For example, through our flagship sustainability journal One Earth and through the Lancet Commissions we have helped synthesize existing evidence, provide new analysis, and outline pathways towards bold visions such as sustainable food systems, net-zero pathways, and linking climate and health more broadly. Additionally, we launched our employee network group SUSTAIN, helping to embed a culture of sustainability across the company and empower all staff to make sustainable choices in their daily roles. We believe every action matters and are looking forward to launching our net zero action plan on the anniversary of signing the climate pledge in June 2022.

Why is it important for companies like yours to be all in on battling climate change?

The scientific consensus that climate change is happening and that global warming temperatures continue to rise due to human activity is indisputable. We all have a collective responsibility to make the future sustainable for our planet. Urgent action is required, and organizations like us, can and should move faster. By holding ourselves accountable for rapidly reducing our direct and indirect emissions, as well as engaging with our entire value chain, we can play our part in tackling climate change. Additionally, Elsevier’s strengths lie in the content that we publish, the insights we provide on the world of research, and in our products. This means we have a responsibility to be catalysts of change in the communities we serve. For example, last year we published a data analytics report, Pathways to Net Zero: The Impact of Clean Energy Research, identifying the opportunities and barriers academia and research face in order to bridge the gap between basic research scalable technology required for a successful energy transition.
