Companies Promoting Healthy Work-Life Balance

HRBP Manager Tech & Product

Tell us a little bit about your personal journey at your current company.

I have a degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Human Resources and Organizational Management. After several experiences in the world of Talent Acquisition and in different sectors, I decided to join Gympass specifically for its mission: to make wellbeing universal. Within Gympass, I have been able to learn different areas: from Talent Acquisition to Operations, and my current role as Human Resources Business Partner. I have been fortunate to work with different countries and teams, and now I focus on the global Technology and Product team. I am a firm believer in a company’s mission and how it can impact the lives of people and employees.

Can you share with us some of your best practices in helping your employees achieve work-life balance?

Flexibility is necessary: each person has their own way of life and personal needs. Understanding what is expected of them and transparency with their leader will allow them to better adapt their working day, and this will positively affect work/life balance.

At Gympass, each Gympasser has the flexibility to adjust their working hours based on their personal schedule, time zone, and business needs. Having flexibility as a key part of our culture allows us to feel comfortable taking the time we need for wellbeing. To this end, we have a hybrid and full remote policy with principles of trust, autonomy, transparency, and accountability for results. We also offer all employees a home office stipend and monthly work allowance to cover the costs of working from home.

Sometimes we may have problems balancing our personal life and work. It may be due to a temporary situation, either at work or in our own lives, and this, in the long run, can generate a feeling of helplessness and fatigue. It is important to raise our hand when a situation starts to overwhelm you and understand how to organize your personal and professional life. As an HRBP, my role is to understand the challenges of the teams and help them understand their priorities by fostering open channels of communication, encouraging constant feedback, and building trust.

Work-life balance is invaluable for single parents like me, who want to give their best to both their career and their family. Being hired at Elsevier was a blessing and a gift, and the experience I have of working here has exceeded my expectations. The hybrid work schedule allows me to accommodate my children’s daily schedule and holiday schedules. I have taken advantage of the option to buy additional PTO (paid time off) to align with our holidays. At this season of life, I cannot imagine a better career experience. I’m exceedingly grateful to work on an amazing team with excellent managers and a CEO who values the people at Elsevier. In fact, our CEO, Kumsal Bayazit, was just recognized as the #2 Best CEO for Women. Read more here.

Elsevier offers a variety of benefits to support work-life balance and beyond.  I have personally taken advantage of many of the benefits, offered by my company and I’m grateful to have a balanced work lifestyle and a balanced personal lifestyle. Read more of my Elsevier Experience.

We know at Elsevier that work-life balance is an important aspect of a healthy work environment. Our culture of maintaining work-life balance helps our people to be their best at work. As we see it, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is not only a priority for health and relationships — it also improves our performance, which is why people managers are trained on managing their team’s work-life challenges and how best to support direct reports.

We empower our people to look after themselves and find a balance between work and life and by doing so, we cultivate a work environment where people are dedicated and mindful.

Providing flexible work arrangements, such as remote work options and flexible schedules, enable people to balance responsibilities at work and thrive. Elsevier’s flexible work option and remote work option allow people to balance their family’s needs, personal needs, hobbies, and volunteer work alongside their day-to-day work expectations. Read a few of our employee testimonials about this in our article “Elsevier Named a “Best Company for Happiness.”

At Elsevier, the welfare of our employees is paramount. Our people are our strength. Work-life balance is in parallel with wellbeing, to create an environment for us all to thrive and Elsevier holds a strong moral responsibility to ensure that employees’ health and well-being are at the heart of the Elsevier Experience.

At Elsevier’s MindLife program, we want to create a diverse, inclusive culture where people live healthy lifestyles and where people’s well-being is a top priority. Our mission is to engage and help people in optimizing their mental, emotional, physical & professional well-being. Also, employees have access to a free license to download Headspace, a personal guide to mindfulness – offering guided exercises, videos, and more.

Elsevier our people make a positive impact on society through volunteerism and giving.  In addition to employees’ annual leave, employees are given two volunteer days. Many take part in team days for our partner charities, but we can choose to work with a charity of our choice.

Talent Director

Tell us a little bit about your personal journey at your current company.

My experience at Lean Solutions Group has been challenging and also the best time in my professional career as Talent Director.

I’ve had the chance to lead several growing Human Resources divisions, which has been a great learning experience personally and professionally and has led my professional career to where I am today.

I’m proud to say that I’m currently a member of the Employee Experience team, where we’re responsible for maintaining our company’s culture and ensuring our employees are committed and excited about working for Lean Solutions Group.

Can you share with us some of your best practices in helping your employees achieve work-life balance?

We have several programs to ensure our employee’s engagement and integration and promote the company’s culture, perspective, sense of belonging, and motivation through cultural activities, corporate events, workshops, salary and non-salary compensation (incentives, loans, recognitions, agreements, financial and emotional benefits), and other ways of remuneration.

Our agreements are designed to fulfill our employees’ demands and specialized interests, including entertainment, sports, financial resources, joy and leisure, pet care, calamities, cuisine, and exclusive discounts at various businesses and healthcare facilities. Additionally, we offer fantastic Lean VIP areas within our offices, where all staff members can access coworking areas, lunch counters, video games, relaxation, and entertainment rooms.

We believe a happy workplace promotes an excellent work environment. Among the main actions that have allowed us to reach our objectives, we highlight the work environment surveys and action plans for our departments, dissatisfaction and conflict management among employees, attention and support to both employees and leaders regarding critical cases, exit interviews, employee retentions per leader’s requests and the data analysis regarding exit interviews and turnover, which have delivered a collection of attrition risks and recommendations that can help improve as a company.

Senior Internal Communications Specialist

Tell us a little bit about your personal journey at your current company.

I’ve been at Vertafore a little over 5 years and started my journey here on the Recruiting team. I really enjoyed recruiting and hiring to grow the Denver Headquarters. In 2020 when we went remote and the world was uncertain, I leaned into the Internal Communications department which had 10x the amount of work compared to 2019. In the Fall of 2020 when Recruiting opened back up again, I decided I wanted to keep on the journey of Internal Communications. The Managers on both teams agreed with exploring this new career, and now I’ve been in Internal Communications for 3 years. Vertafore allowed me to forge my own career path and it’s been so rewarding.

Can you share with us some of your best practices in helping your employees achieve work-life balance?

At Vertafore, work-life balance is an important part of our culture and one we know fosters happy employees. We have a comprehensive benefits package including Flex PTO, Volunteer PTO, and ample holidays. We also have Refresh & Recharge Day – a holiday we added to our schedule in April every year to encourage our employees to unplug from work and enjoy the day doing something they love. We work in a Flexible First environment, meaning team members work from home as often as they’d like, while using our offices as a place for collaboration, community, and team building. Vertafore currently has 5 Employee Resource Groups that hold regular activities and social events – both virtual and in-person – helping our employees connect with their peers and communities. We also host events like Bring Your Kid to Work Day and support our parents with the Vertafore Parent Network.

Since joining City I have had the pleasure of leading teams of professionals who have contributed significantly to the growth and culture of the company. We have maintained staffing levels at 95% in a highly competitive market, we have created training and development programs for our frontline teams and leaders, encouraging and inspiring personal and professional growth, we’ve reduced costs by 65% in a challenging pre and post-pandemic landscape. In lockstep with the senior leaders and individual contributors, we have built a positive and equitable culture that am thrilled to be a part of and continue my journey with.

Can you share with us some of your best practices in helping your employees achieve work-life balance?

Our City team members are parents, they have hobbies, they are in relationships, they have friends, they enjoy vacationing, they like downtime and on top of all that, they have work to contend with. We want them to enjoy their lives outside of City so that when they are with us, they are happy, relaxed, rested, and recharged, which leads to improved team member satisfaction and retention, more creativity and collaboration and overall better mental and physical health. To support that, we provide flexibility in work schedules to allow for those afternoon school pickups, those middle of the day doctor appointments or those mid-morning stretch breaks. We provide award winning wellbeing resources, financial education resources, a paid volunteer day, 28 days of paid time off at all levels, a progressive and responsive approach to hybrid work schedules, and programs to equip our team members with the skill of not only managing their time, but also understanding and managing their energy. Our goal is to have each team member be their best self in and outside of their working hours.

Tell us a little bit about your personal journey at your current company.

During my time at Certinia, which began almost a year ago, I have experienced a personal journey filled with positive revelations about the company’s values and culture. From the very beginning, I noticed that Certinia places great importance on work-life balance, flexibility, and understanding. This has been particularly significant for me as a working parent. The company has shown exceptional understanding and grace when it comes to situations like having a sick toddler at home or requiring time off to attend to my family’s needs. Their support during these challenging moments has made me feel valued and appreciated as an employee, fostering a sense of loyalty and dedication towards the company. It has been a rewarding journey, knowing that I am part of an organization that genuinely cares about its employees’ well-being.

Can you share with us some of your best practices in helping your employees achieve work-life balance?

At Certinia, we have implemented several best practices to help our employees achieve work-life balance and prioritize their well-being. One of our core values is to “champion each other,” and we actively translate this into action through various programs and initiatives. Each country we operate in has 8-13 paid public holidays, and we offer Flexible Time Off to all salaried employees. We recognize the significance of family and offer Paid Parental Leave from Day 1, ensuring that new parents have the support and flexibility they need during this important phase of their lives. Moreover, to encourage employees to engage in social causes, we provide Paid Volunteer Days, allowing individuals to dedicate 4 hours per quarter to give back to their communities. To further promote work-life balance, we have an End of December Company Shutdown every year, enabling our employees to enjoy uninterrupted time with their loved ones during the holiday season and recharge for the upcoming year. Additionally, we have three additional Certinia-specific holidays each year: one day is dedicated to education or community action, one day to focus on friends and family, and one day to prioritize personal health and well-being. By championing each other and investing in these programs, we strive to ensure that our employees can maintain a healthy work-life integration, allowing them to bring their best selves to work every day while nurturing their personal lives and relationships.

Upon joining symplr, I was pleasantly surprised by the commitment to work-life balance. It was evident from my very first week that it was an essential aspect of our company culture. The offerings of fully remote work, permissive time off, flexible schedules, and comprehensive wellness benefits have made such a positive impact on my life. They’ve allowed me to pursue hobbies and recreational activities that I had previously set aside due to conflicting work obligations. The encouragement to step away and spend quality time with my loved ones has proven invaluable, as it further energizes my motivation and dedication to excellence in my work.

Can you share with us some of your best practices in helping your employees achieve work-life balance?

At symplr, we recognize the importance of providing a healthy work-life balance for our employees, understanding that it empowers them to thrive both professionally and personally. We offer a range of resources and benefits to support their well-being and promote a balanced lifestyle.

One of the ways we promote work-life balance is through our permissive unlimited Paid Time Off policy, encouraging employees to take time off when needed to rest and recharge. Additionally, our remote-first work environment provides the freedom for our teams to choose their work location, allowing them to save valuable time and focus more effectively on their tasks and projects in their preferred setting.

We also understand that our employees have commitments beyond their careers, and we value their personal priorities. Flexible working hours help our employees find that balance between their professional and personal lives. Our working parents greatly benefit from the flexibility offered, as well as the support provided by our dedicated employee resource group, symplr Parents and Caregivers (sPACs), which gives a safe space for our working parents and caregivers to connect and exchange ideas for a better work-life balance. Through partnerships with platforms such as Headspace, Care.com, and Cleo, we offer free memberships to support mental health, caregiving needs, and parenting challenges with the aim to assist all our employees in navigating the complexities of maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Software Engineering Director

I’ve been at Squarespace for almost 6 years now. While I joined the company as a senior software engineer, throughout my time here I’ve been fortunate to wear many hats – Team Lead, Staff Engineer, Engineering Manager, Senior Engineering Manager, and now Engineering Director. As an engineer and manager I helped bootstrap the International Engineering practice, and now as the Engineering Director of Market Expansion I help lead the International and Enterprise Engineering teams. It’s been an amazing experience to be an active participant in the cross-functional team of new and accelerating business lines.

Can you share with us some of your best practices in helping your employees achieve work-life balance?

I think work-life balance is critical. As a parent of two young kids, it’s extremely important to me to find a balance between my full-time job at work and my full-time responsibilities as a dad. I’m personally grateful for and encourage my teams to take advantage of our flexible PTO policy. I simply ask that teammates fill out a PTO Handoff document before any scheduled PTO for any time equal to or more than 3 days so that responsibilities aren’t dropped while teammates are away.

I also encourage my long-tenured team members to apply for our sabbatical program. A fully paid six-week sabbatical has been a great way to retain and reward long-tenured employees, and I find that coworkers who come back from sabbatical return refreshed and excited to “start fresh.”

Corporate Communications Director

I’ve been with CECO for just over two years, handling the company’s internal and external communications. I wanted to work for an employer that serves a greater purpose in this world and makes an impact, both through its people and the solutions it provides. CECO’s focus is on making our planet a cleaner, healthier place by providing companies with engineering designs and solutions that reduce noise and air pollution, provide clean water and support the transition to clean energy. The company also cares about the well-being of its team members, and I’m proud to be part of an organization that cares about the growth, development, health and wellness of every person at CECO.

Can you share with us some of your best practices in helping your employees achieve work-life balance?

In 2022, CECO introduced our flexible time off policy, shifting from a limited accrued number of vacation days each year, to an unlimited amount, giving team members the power to determine when and how much time they need to take off, and encouraging them to take time off to refresh and revitalize. This year, we expanded our paid time off policy to also include paid time off in hourly increments to support the needs of team members who are attending school conferences for their children, medical appointments, emergencies, or caring for a child or family member, to cite a few examples.

In addition, we continue to support a hybrid and/or remote work environment for our office employees, giving them the flexibility to work from home or come into the office for in-person collaboration, when needed. We have the technology in place to conduct business from anywhere in the world, and we encourage team members to sign off at the end of their workday as we recognize the importance of personal time. The health and wellness of our team members is our greatest concern, as a happy and healthy workforce not only increases engagement and productivity, but also it improves retention.

I started working at Esri after finishing my master’s. Esri was my first full-time employment opportunity. As someone who had no experience working in a professional setting, I found my co-workers to be patient, forgiving, and willing to help. I will always be grateful for the help and guidance I have received, particularly in the first few years. I really enjoy the unique challenges I get to work on and solve at Esri. It is always exciting to learn how users leverage our technology to solve complicated problems. I have had the opportunity to learn new technologies and skills that have helped me advance my professional career at Esri. Esri, as a company, truly cares about the well-being of its employees. I look forward to what’s next for me and for Esri.

Can you share with us some of your best practices in helping your employees achieve work-life balance?

Having an honest conversation about work-life balance is a great start to helping employees achieve work-life balance. I make it a priority to have regular check-ins with my employees and I encourage them to plan their work and help prioritize their tasks. I find that having a consistent schedule helps to define when the workday ends while also ensuring flexibility to accommodate life circumstances. We also have conversations about taking vacations and come up with a plan that allows my team to completely unplug from work (i.e. emails, chat) when they are on vacation.

Every time I tell someone I work at Globant, they ask me if there’s an opening here for them. There are a lot of reasons to work here, but one of the most important is the work-life balance. Not only for the schedule and workplace flexibility, but also because of the opposite: Globant has amazing offices with tons of comfy places to work and a lot of ways to have fun and enjoy your day at work. And I haven’t even mentioned the award-winning culture or the level of autonomy you have in every task and having ownership of your career path. That makes you feel empowered and lets you choose your own way of doing things and growing your career.

Can you share with us some of your best practices in helping your employees achieve work-life balance?

We believe that it is possible to be an organization where personal life purpose is aligned with company purpose. For that reason, we promote a healthy environment to unleash the full potential of all Globers.
Our “Be Kind to Yourself” initiative integrates all our benefits, campaigns, and activities related to wellness and work-life balance from a comprehensive perspective, understanding that the well-being of our people depends on a good work-life balance and taking care of both physical and emotional health. Some of our best practices are extensive health insurance for the Glober and their family, schedule flexibility and work-from-anywhere benefit, our parenting program that covers a diversity of family compositions and fosters equality in childcare as well as family planning tools, quit smoking programs, nutrition and mental health webinars, and even pet healthcare, among other benefits we’re always adding to.
