Internal mobility is part of our culture at Amazon. Our Leadership Principle “Hire and Develop the Best” reminds managers to recognize exceptional talent and move them throughout the organization. Investing in broadening employee skill sets fundamentally breeds big thinking and best practice sharing, and employees are empowered to chase their big ideas, sometimes by taking on a new role. We want to make it easy for people to have access to the skills they need to grow their careers. As an example, we’ve committed more than $1.2 billion to provide free education and skills training opportunities to more than 300,000 of our own employees in the U.S. by 2025 to help them secure new, high-growth jobs. How does internal mobility benefit your employees, especially during the Great Resignation?

It’s a well-known fact that participation in an internal mobility program increases employee tenure. At Uber, we see employees staying more than twice as long when they are part of any kind of internal move. Employees today have more choice (and power) than ever when it comes to working. At Uber, we want to help our team explore and find their next opportunity right here. We also see that internal transfers who “up-level” into a new role on average perform better the next performance cycle than peers who were already at that level/in that role.

Do you have any programs in place that focus on internal mobility for your employees?

We have many programs to facilitate internal movement at Uber. That starts with our internal jobs marketplace, where all our open roles globally are posted and easily accessible to current employees. We also offer several short-term assignment opportunities — from business-driven assignments that come up as needed, to more structured programs that match employees with high-impact projects tackling some of our most interesting business problems. Lastly, we’ve been expanding a program where part-time “gig” projects are posted to a centralized Talent Marketplace for employees to explore and apply to. This is designed for employees to try something completely new or get experience in a part of the business they’ve never worked in before.
