Companies that Know the Value of Hiring Veterans

Thursday, November 11th is Veteran’s Day, a federal holiday to honor all veterans and thank them for their service. Hiring managers know that military veterans are team-oriented, often have leadership experience, and are used to learning new work disciplines. Here are four companies that tell us more about why hiring veterans is a no-brainer.

What are the benefits to your company of hiring veterans?

We are committed to the representation and inclusion of all underrepresented groups at Capital One, which includes all people of color, women, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities and veterans. Veterans bring essential skills to Capital One: teamwork, collaboration, adaptability, resilience, critical thinking, and time management, just to name a few. Capital One has partnered with Hiring Our Heroes since its inception in 2011 as part of our commitment to creating a place where associates of all backgrounds can thrive, including military talent. We partner with the program for its hiring campaigns, attend job fairs and, since 2019, have partnered with them in the Hiring Our Heroes Fellowship Program. We truly value the unique abilities and experiences the military brings to their civilian work and supporting veterans is part of advancing our culture of diversity, inclusion and belonging.

Beginning at onboarding, Capital One provides a cohesive experience that makes new associates feel welcome. We help military hires gain the confidence to tackle their duties and learn about Capital One’s culture through a customized checklist, one-on-one support from colleagues and learning modules for veterans and military spouses. We also provide hiring managers with course materials for creating tailored transition plans for new military hires.Capital One has several business resource groups that help amplify diversity, inclusion and belonging at Capital One, including Salute, a community that enables military, military spouse and veteran associates to thrive through associate engagement, active duty transition, recruiting, community engagement and reserve support. With more than 5,000 members and 15 local chapters, Salute regularly hosts networking events, trivia nights and volunteer opportunities. Associates in Salute host networking receptions for veterans and military spouses, participate in mock interviews and resume reviews for disabled veterans, and prepare care packages for active duty service members. Salute also founded the “Serve the Reserves” program, designed to provide check-ins with military spouses and families while their spouse or parent is deployed. We acknowledge and respect rights reserved under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, and help to provide job protection to eligible individuals on leave for uniformed service. For military training and active duty time off, we pay eligible associates 100 percent for up to eight weeks of leave, with eligibility for pay differential between military and Capital One salaries upon return to work after active duty. We’re also proud to be part of the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP), a prestigious award for companies committed to hiring and supporting military spouses in the workforce.
